We had been disconcerted by a number of indifferent reviews, but on looking more closely it became apparent that several people had incorrectly posted their reviews here instead of Portofino Viaduct. Easy error to make, but potentially costly for Portofino Mission Bay, which seems a more reliable bet.
We have informed TripAdvisor of the errors (interesting that the restaurant Manager had not spotted that issue - perhaps suggests that they don't track what customers think - it's time they did).
So, what of Portofino Mission Bay? We received a very warm welcome (from TJ), who thoughtfully placed us in a quieter part of the restaurant. He remained attentive and efficient throughout, recommending dishes and being helpful about the choice of wine and so forth. He was an experienced member of staff, also trained as a chef (he said) and he helped to make the evening a success.
We had garlic bread for starter; well-cooked, tasty, not too oily, good.
For her taste, my wife's pizza was rather over-spiced with chilli (and in fact the menu had not mentioned chilli among the ingredients!). My Chicken Parmigiano was very enjoyable. Our desserts were 50/50 - my cheesecake was a bit too glutinous, but my wife's tiramisu was well up to standard.
The Italian wine on the list includes some very attractive options, priced sensitively. We usually have NZ wine, but on this occasion we did enjoy the opportunity to visit the Mediterranean.
Overall, the service made the evening. Otherwise, probably 3 stars.
