“Perfect for last night in Auckland”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 14, 2013

We stayed here our last night in Auckland after a 2 week Kiwi adventure before flying home to Canada. Great little place. Friendly staff. Quaint pub.

Be prepared to lug a suitcase up several flights of stairs though as there is no elevator.

Very old building, but has some ridiculous character and some characters running it too, super nice! Was wonderful to have a long hot shower and sleep in a real bed after a 2 week camper-van excursion.

Staff was helpful immediately and we were able to keep our bags behind the bar on the last day after check out while we trolled around the city.

Microbrew beer is great too!!

Thank you!!

We did not stay here, only dined here for dinner, so this review is for the meal. Their 500 gram Angus Rump for $15 was cooked to perfection, so no complaint here. The rest of the menu looked good too. Service was extremely friendly and efficient. The Hotel has a lot of charm too. A great find for a solid meal when hungry. Sometimes you can't beat pub food!

We stayed here for a night when passing through Auckland and liked it so much we came back a week later for a few nights. The rooms are clean and great value for money, but what really stood out was the great staff, including the owner. All were really friendly, happy and most importantly helpful. Could not reccommend this place strongly enough, it was great.

Sure the rooms were a little smaller and there is no elevator, but this was all to be expectected in a beautiful heritage building. I don't know many people that struggle too much with a couple of flights of stairs.

Thanks guys, I'll be back :)

we had a very pleasant stay here. The staff are great, the food was great.
The location is really good, right in the city. the bedrooms are very noisy at the front of the hotel.
Good price and each room has it's own En Suite. I would stay there again. keeps you fit running up and down the stairs, as there is no lift.

Room Tip: Rooms at the back much quieter.

I stayed here two nights a couple weeks ago. The room was small but clean. It gets noisy at night, with the pub and being located near so many attractions, so bring your earplugs. Pluses: The hotel, being the oldest pub in Auckland, has some atmosphere. Staff were friendly. Minuses: If you come in from Auckland on an early flight, the hotel might not be open when you get there. I arrived at the hotel before 8:00 a.m., and even though I'd sent a note indicating I was coming early, there was no one to let me in (and no one answered the phone). I went to the coffee shop across the street (Hollywood Bakery), had a coffee and a small breakfast, and waited until 9:00.

the location of the hotel was fantastic, but there is no lift in the building, and the stairs are quite narrow, so it's hard to navigate if you have luggage. also, the beds were fairly clean, but the windows and ledges were dusty and full of trash from previous guests. my cousin, whom i was travelling with, developed hives a few hours after we went to bed, and i got bitten by a sandfly, a bite which is still swollen and raw two weeks later. also, it can get a bit noisy considering you're sleeping right above the bar, but you get what you pay for, i guess!

I stayed there for just one night after arriving in Auckland. I was a bit worried about possible noise on that Friday night, but all was good and so I had a relaxing night in a comfortable room. It's basic (no A/C, but wasn't required) and not too spacious but overall a very nice place with friendly staff, free wifi (on the ground floor, but also just worked in my room) and ideally located in the heart of the city. Good value given other hotel's prices.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
