“Recomended for the old worl pub feeling”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2011

Stayed here for 2 nights and had a great time. Friendly service and great old world hotel atmosphere right in the middle of the city. Will definitely be back next year.

Boutique Hotel, A TOTAL mis-representation. 5 Floor walk-up, rooms so small you can't change your mind, service non-existant. TV didn't work, management knew it didn't work and still assigned me the room. Asked for manager several times, left cell number and never a call. Asked why room was not made up and reply, "it's the maids day off". This joint should not be allowed to solicit business. It is one-half step above a back-packers hostel. A pox on the Shakespeare and the owners that solicit lodgers.

Picked this hotel after looking at the website which states that it is a boutique hotel and brewery. The website needs updating as this is very misleading. Room was very small and very basic although clean. On the night that we stayed there was a 21 birthday party and it was very noisey. In total a very disappointing night for our one and only night in Auckland.

This hotel was part of a brewery which had stopped brewing 3 months previously. It looked impressive on the website but the rooms were a bit small and tired. It was quite noisy.

This is, by no stretch of the imagination, a hotel, never mind a boutique hotel. There is no reception - there is a bar, and no lift and no help to drag cases to your room. This is Auckland's only 24 hour pub. It just happens to have bedrooms upstairs. It isn't even a brewery any more, they just haven't removed the brewing equipment!
Unless you have booked a deluxe room, which to be fair, have recently been refurbished and are passable, the rooms are very very small, hot, shabby, and in our case dirty.
The room we were offered had almost literally just been vacated by it's previous occupant. The bed sheets were still crumpled on the bed, and their garbage was nestling quietly on the shelf (no bin in the room).
Location wise it's good for access to the marina - a short walk away. It's easy to find, being right on a main road.
Noise levels are a problem. The main room, the 24hr pub and the sports channels being shown mean that sleep can be evasive.
The staff we encountered seemed to be over worked, tired and not that interested. The guys who checked us in at 08h00 was still working behind the bar at 14h00 and again at 20h00 when we went past again.
Overall, not a great experience - very disappointing first stay in Auckland. The website is hugely misleading.

The only thing it has going is location. The rooms are small, the service is TERRIBLE (we had a broken TV and they couldnt fix it for the 3 days we were there). Since there isnt air conditioning, and the fan barely cools, the windows needed to be open and it is extremely loud all night. There are no elevators. You can do much better, most hotels are within walking distance to everything and the noise get old by the second night of no sleep.

I visited in december and hot footed over to get a pint of their excelent home brewed beer, shock and horror greeted me as not one real ale hand pump was evident on the bar.

Th lady serving said that they had to stop brewing as the demand wasn't high enough to justify the cost of the brewing, what a sad demise for aucklanders and visitors alike.

I guess the locals prefer all the horrible fizzy soda like muck thats brewed in NZ, its a sad loss for auckland indeed.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
1898 was the birth of the Shakespeare Hotel and ever since then it has been serving New Zealanders and travelers from around the globe with warm hospitality and wonderful flavours in food being New Zealand's first Brewpub, with our own crafted beer, handcrafted from one of New Zealand's award winning Brewers and a mix of local NZ beers. The Location of the Hotel is excellent bang in the middle of Auckland City so close to all transport with buses, ferrys etc within a few hundred meters. The accommodation consists of 10 rooms which are basic with an en-suite and the beds are comfortable. This is not your typical boring hotel. The Shakespeare oozes character and if you are afraid of walking up a few stairs then probably not the place to stay. Each room is different and the rooms on the top floor are more modern than the lower floor. The Terrace Restaurant offers a great mix of cuisine, live music out on the al fresco dining deck overlooking the city every Friday. We are not 5 star in terms of accommodation but we are definitely 5 stars in a good quality Kiwi experience...we look forward to having you as our guests.... ... more   less
