“Good location, good room - shame about the service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed December 17, 2010

Hotel is located a short walk from the centre of town. The train station is a brisk 15 minute walk. There are some steep hills to get to the hotel from the main street which may concern some with walking difficulties.

Foyer and lobby are unimpressive but rooms are surprisingly good. Rooms are roomy, nicely furnished and fully equipped - fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, hot plates and full range of cooking utensils and crockery. A continental breakfast is provided in the room fridge - bread, spreads, juice, coffee/tea, milk, cereals.

All this would suggest a comfortable stay however we were very disappointed with the standard of service provided. On one occasion our room was not serviced (bed not made, dirty towels not replaced, bathroom not cleaned, kitchen not cleaned, rubbish not removed, room not vacuumed, coffee/tea/juice not replaced) despite requesting this THREE times directly at reception during the day.

A written complaint to management got us a partial service the following day. This partial 'service' for some reason again meant the room was not vacuumed and certain items such as dirty towels and breakfast not replaced.

In addition the hotel didn't have 'Do not Disturb' signs available and made no effort to rectify this.

It was disappointing that we had repeated issues with getting a basic level of housekeeping as our early impressions were positive based on the room itself and the location. Unfortunately for this reason we would not recommend staying at the Auckland City Oaks as the service standard didn't meet the minimum expected level.

Made use of trip advisor to book this and got a really reasonable price. The room looked appealing when we walked in. Very clean and comfortable. This hotel is a little way from the very centre of Auckland which was good for noise reduction. Not far to walk to the sky tower. Close to buses. We had a view from the verandah. Would recommend and stay there again.

In terms of location, it is pretty near the sky tower and walking distance from the harbour and k road. Down the street is a korean supermarket which opens till late.

The room we got was nicely divided into a sitting area/kitchenette and a bedroom. Shower pressure was great too.

The only areas which could be improved are parking and the internet service. It has a small basement carpark and it charges $20 per day. If you are parked behind another car, you have to get the reception to remove the car in front of yours before you can get out. No free internet, and the computer terminal (free) at the lobby is always occupied!

To us, the hotel served its purpose. A night of rest after our flight before heading out of Auckland.

The room is good. Spacious, self contained - it had oven, cooktops, microwave, kitchen utensils and even a laundry machine. Clean, but with some stains on the wall (it needs a new paint). Service was good - I had a problem with the first room (the sink was clogged), but they changed my room as soon as I told them the problem without argue, and even upgraded the room to a 2 bedroom unit. Location is not ideal, but it's walkable. It's not far to walk from the very centre, but it's uphill, so it's a bit tiring to get there, specially with luggage. The street outside is noisy, but I asked for a quiet room when I booked and they put me in a room at the back, quiet enough. Breakfast was included, very basic - 4 toasts (for 2 people), orange juice, milk and cereals. Internet is payed, but there is one computer at reception you can use for free. Overall, for NZD 89 a night, I recommend it.

We stayed in a comfy 1 bedroom apartment, it was plenty spacious enough for us, but it was really more of a studio. You could block the bedroom off with a sliding screen, but the screen literally touched the end of the bed.
The room was reasonably well kept and clean, there was a CRT TV which seemed a little out of place, but it worked well and had a few payTV channels on it so we were fine.
The room also had cooking and washing facilities but we didn’t have a need to use them.
Breakfast was included as part of our package, but it was pretty limited – a couple of prices of toast and some cereal left in the fridge. We didn’t bother.
Some of the other reviews complained about noise, but we didn’t find it noisy at all, and it was an easy walk to the Casino, and Auckland other parts of Auckland City.
Downsides – There is limited parking and once it’s full you are left to fend for yourself in expensive local parking stations that felt less than secure.
The biggest let-down was the lack of hot water, and I don’t mean it ran cold, I mean there was literally NO hot water – The hot tap when fully open returned nothing at all.
I called reception and they advised it was a maintenance issue and would be resolved within half an hour (this was around 7am). At 8am I called again as we really needed to get moving, and was again advised it was a maintenance issue and would be fixed in half an hour. With no other choices it was freezing cold showers all around, then off to our next destination.
While the water annoyed us, it’s unlikely this is a common occurrence, and we’d certainly give this place another chance.

We stayed at the Auckland City Oaks Hotel for 3 nights during mid November. The building was very secure. Only those with keys can even get past the front desk. The rooms were very nice, clean, and modern. They included a washer/dryer, stove top, dishwasher, and while we were there they got new flat screen TVs. It was truly nice, after 9 days in Fiji, to have a place to wash our clothes properly. I had planned to just wash them in the sink, but was pleasantly surprised to find the washer/dryer.

The hotel is only about 3 blocks away from the Sky Tower. It is also only a few blocks away from Queen Street, where we found many of the shopping and eating establishments. With only a few minute walk we found ourselves on Quay Street and in Viaduct Harbour.

We plan to find similar hotels in the future on our other trips around the world. Really a great hotel.

This hotel is centrally located. Being 4 and 1/2 star self rated, the room and furnitures are relatively new. However the air conditioner makes loud noise but does not deliver cool air. We called the service desk who advised us to wait until morning for someone to have a look. That same night I was awake sweating all over, learnt that the air conditioning was fully stopped due to a power failure. The staff was not very helpful in providing good solution.

We found the kettle was leaking and was told that it was not possible to change another one, the staff says 'I will check other rooms to see if there are any ones I can swap with your room", but never turned up.

Me any my partner believe they are way, way far from the claimed 4 1/2 star. The service was extremely unsatisfying.
