“Hip attractive bistro in St Heliers with outstanding views”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed July 22, 2013

We have been multiple times, for business meetings, breakfast , lunch and coffee in various combinations. The strength of this bistro: warm, excellent service, ambience and decor are outstanding, options of takeout, casual or fine dining, and buzzy hip atmosphere. Seating is comfortable. Take out food is very tasty ( same group as The Store in Kohimarama). Parking is good, and it is right by the lovely St Heliers beach and shops.
Downside: busy, no reservations taken ( although they usually find you a table quickly), little room between tables so not ideal for private conversations, expensive, and food and coffee is quite variable, hence 4 star not 5 star rating.
Come here for fun and being part of the action; go to Mortens or La Fourchette in St Heliers for more consistent dining.

“Way to go Hip Group!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed June 25, 2013

If you're in beautiful St Heliers Bay don't go past St Heliers Café for lunch or dinner. Three of us went there for dinner in April and it was sensational. Four of us went back there for dinner for my birthday a couple of weeks ago and it was just as fabulous again. Loved the new winter menu - a great range of interesting entrees and mains that make it very difficult to choose and make you want to come back. The fact that I can remember my delicious Beef carpaccio entrée and hot smoked salmon salad with dill potatoes main says it all. Not to mention the irresistible dessert cabinet and house made gelato range... Top notch service from friendly and knowledgeable wait-staff. They don't take bookings (which we knew about) and we were told it would be a 30 minute wait which we were happy with. When the wait turned into a 40 minute one we were brought complimentary glasses of Prosecco. Lovely ambience, wonderful food, terrific service. We were all grins.

“One Busy restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 24, 2013

Went at lunch and managed to get a seat in the window on a cool but sunny day - very pleasant with the harbour in front of me. Parsnip soup was good and on mentioning that we were on a limited lunch break got very quick service. The slightly sparkling water is very refreshing and a nice difference.

15 minutes from downtown so a bit of a stretch at lunch.

“Not as outstanding as the reviews indicated.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 19, 2013

The St Heliers Bay cafe/bistro is relatively new. It has a contemporary fit out, with a casual, light atmosphere. Its location lends itself to lunch & dinner on long summer evenings. Unfortunately you cannot book, so its a bit of a gamble (unless you live nearby) to drive out there, knowing that you may have to wait some time for a table. Having heard some glowing reports, we headed out there on a Tuesday evening in June, as soon as we could get away from work. It was about 6.15 when we arrived and we were delighted to find that there were two small tables free. The service was prompt and good. To be frank - I found the food a bit of an anti climax. But I have very high standards, and Auckland has many very good restaurants to choose from.

“Great but you can't book”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed June 15, 2013

We should all just wait till the global economic crisis gets so bad that those hip food and drink places that won't take bookings are forced to grovel for business. Look the St Heliers Cafe & Bistro is really good. Across the road is the bay, there is plenty of parking and the service and food are pretty good. The place has a great vibe but at these prices you should be able to book not hang around waiting for the plastic lobster to vibrate to show your table is ready.
