We spent a day on the island just before Xmas ! Its a magical place with native birds and bush and bird song and amazing views! All the family had a great time and would love to go again! A great day out! We went from Gulf Harbour on the boat!

“Amazing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2014

I have lived in Auckland for 40 years and despite hearing good things, yesterday was my first visit to Tiri Tiri Matangi Island. It was a truly amazing experience. The replanting and strict pest control has paid off with the fattest tuis that I have ever seen. The puriri held many enormous kereru ( wood pigeon) and the bush abounded with robin, stitch birds, saddlebacks, kokako, bell birds and the ever present tui and fantail. You had to have sharp eyes and it tooks a short time to get our "birding eye"in.
Takahe are present and it was wonderful to see them grazing with no concern for humans.
It was reminiscent of our trip to the Galapagos where the birds and mammals are not bothered. We saw baby oyster catchers and penguins nesting. This island is a must do day trip. Not far from Gulf Harbour and a bit longer from down town. We had a brilliant day picnicking under the trees while out on a walk.
Take your lunch, though you can order it online. tea and coffee was available at the visitors centre. We took binoculars as well as cameras.
We will go again soon as we didn't see half of it.

“If you haven't been yet - go!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 28, 2014

Many years of effort replanting this island and introducing native birds have paid off. You can walk for hours or for a minimum of about 20 minutes seeing the birds (and hearing them) or checking out the lighthouse and its history which is fascinating. The light was 11 million candle power back in the day - the modern solar powered one is 50 Watts!

The little gift shop is nice too and they'll deliver your purchases to the ferry, which is great except we didn't arrive on the ferry.

I should also mention that the last time we went we saw a pod of Orca close up by the ferry wharf but by then I'd flattened my camera battery taking pictures of birds!

Great place, we'll be back lots.

“A great day trip from Auckland ”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

I don't know why it has taken me so long to visit this island, now a protected bird sanctuary. I will be visiting again as it is a place that gives you different experiences depending on the time of year.
While the ferry fare seemed expensive it was well worth it as this island is a must-see for NZers and tourists alike.
You need to do the guided walk to get the most out of your time on the island. The volunteers are so knowledgeable. A great way to see native NZ birds and the bush
is pretty amazing too. A must for visitors who are only stopping in Auckland and not venturing further as it is a perfect example of NZ's beautiful bush & bird life.
Tracks are well formed and manageable for all ages.

“Tread Lightly and Enjoy Mightily”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

This is my second visit and not much has changed. The gift shop and other amenities are much improved, but the guided walks and the efforts to provide a pest-free environment for threatened plants and birds continue to be exceptional. I am not a birder nor one who thrives on naming trees so the guide's knowledge and the excellent yet discrete signage are essential ingredients to make this a learning adventure. One highlight not always present is a thrilling return to Auckland port with a strong wind and about 100 yachts, including the Steinlager, sharing the gulf with our 360 Ferry. Go on a friday and you may be so lucky.
