“Fantastic day trip”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2014

This is definitely a great way to spend the day and see conservation in action. The efforts of a corps of volunteers are converting this now lush island into a predictor free bird sanctuary.

“Peaceful island, quick ferry from downtown Auckland”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 17, 2014

I'll review the island, ferry company and guided tours separately.

Island: Very nice island, set aside as a bird sanctuary. I'm not much of a bird watcher, but I still found it very interesting and entertaining. The island is beautiful, and some of the views of the surrounding harbour are beautiful.

Guided walk: Great communication, and allowed us to join a group right at the last minute (we didn't pre book). Our guide was entertaining, and enthusiastic. I enjoyed her genuine love the for island and animals, and her knowledge was great to hear.

Ferry: The ferry is very comfortable, and for someone without sea legs, not a bad go if the weather is clear. We cancelled an earlier booking because of the weather, right after checking in at the ferry terminal. Customer services was very polite, and efficient. And rescheduled my booking to the following weekend. My only downside is the cue to check in. We got in early, and still waited a fair amount of time. There was only one person checking in, who was also dealing with walk-in customers asking about other tours etc. I felt this was too little staff. After we checked in, we waited in the coffee shop across the road, and watched the cue grow. You need a better system for checking in I think.

All in all though, a great day out. And the savings of a voucher made it even better!

“Peaceful”

Lovely walk around island surrounded by birdsong. Need to book trip as numbers and days are limited. Strict adherence to pest control.

“BEST Place in NZ to See the Birds”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 16, 2014

Last went when it was being set up many years ago. There was little bush and little to see. But that has all changed. You will see saddlebacks, stichbird, wood pigeons, whiteheads, bellbirds and takahe in abundance. Many of the birds can be seen at the sugar feeding stations and water troughs. We took the ferry (1,25 hours) from Auckland central wharf.
