It certainly is in the best five without any doubt and it cost us only $20 more for a seven course degustation than it did for a mediocre three course meal in Cable Bay. And the wine list in Kazuya is the best I have seen in Auckland. We had a bottle of Neudorf pinot gris and a half-bottle (yes, a restaurant at last which does half bottles!) of a Morey St Denis.
The ambiance is black and white with the spotlights focused on the table which made for good ambiance and easy seeing. The waitresses all wore gloves, were polite and knowledgeable about the dishes. They were invisible but always at hand.
The seven course seasonal degustation is beyond description. The titles (see the website) hardly convey the subtleties of flavour yet the tastes were not exotic nor striving for the unusual or stupid, like, say, apple and beetroot. There were authentic and powerful. My wife and I disagreed on the best courses but I liked the seasonal salad (which my friends will never believe!) and the scallop and shrimp. Even the home made breads were fantastic. I am unable to transfer my iPhone photos to this article which is a shame.. Go there - now!
