We have been Auckland residents for 42 years, yet had never been to see the Howick Historical Village. (Shame on us!) However - we have now corrected this oversight.
We went there on one of their 'non-live' days and, though probably some of the character was missing, there was also more room to move and actually see the different exhibits, rather than being part of a large crowd.
We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and the isometric map provided gave us a very good idea of the layout of the village and the points of interest. Additionally, the map gives a good mini-history of each building.
The layout is very 'village-like', with the houses grouped mainly to one side of a pond and some open, green spaces. We particularly enjoyed the personal histories of the inhabitants of the buildings and were disappointed that one or two of these were a little worse for the weather having had access to them.
Afterwards, there was a very pleasant lunch to be had at the building housing the entrance/exit area and shop.
Well worth a visit and we'll be returning with some visitors to Auckland in the near future.
