Public transport around Auckland can be tricky but the trains/buses have a fabulous online journey planner for finding the best/most direct route anywhere. Each bus-stop has got a LED readout saying when the next bus will be along. Awesome right? This is SO customer friendly. The Kiwis are so good at this human scale design and organisation. Not flashy, not in your face, just what is needed to make it work nicely. To get to the Howick Historical Village on the bus look a bit of time, going through some diverse but fascinating suburbs. Friendly bus driver told me when to get off, because it was to be found in an unlikely area. The little village enclave is within a much larger sports park outside of Howick itself and is a bit of a walk down through cricket pitches and rugby fields. It was beautiful weather, warm but too hot.
The most fabulous thing about the Howick Historical Village is that is is completely open for inspection, no ropes across or restrictions and you can wander into any of the interiors and have a good old geek at the lovely collection of old stuff arranged as ordinary houses, workplaces and gardens. There is the main house, several village homes, a smithy, dame school, public house and much more arranged around a big village pond. There is a bit of revisionary history going on, but it felt idyllic the day I was there, I was utterly transported back in time wandering around, forgetting all modern day woes and aggravations. It was absolutely delightful and I would happily remain in that rustic untrammeled world forever. I can't recommend it enough as an experience.
Going back to central Auckland didn't fit in with the bus timetable (it was public holiday), so I walked some way to the ferry, which is badly signed. Luckily I met someone who had GPS on his phone and only had to wait a while on the ramp once we had found it. Gorgeous run back into the city. Beautiful harbour. A cracking good day out to remember for ever.
