I love the Waitaks. I work as a tour guide in this rain forest and it is the best job in the world. If you start at the Arataki Visitor center it sets you up for a day of wonder, beauty and history. Watch the 12 minute video and find out the history of the area, how they were formed from a 900 year volcanic explosion. Wander the bush and the black sand beaches. Visit the Aho Aho falls at Karekare Beach. From the parking lot walk up the hill to the La Trobe Track sign then take the trail to the falls, jus like being in Jurassic Park, but on dinosaurs. Wander out through the Pohutakawa Glade to the beach where they filmed the Piano. From there head to Piha, New Zealands most photographed beach, If you do go swiming make sure to stay between the flags as it is a dangerous beach. Walk the trail in the Glen Esk Valley and see the beautiful trees and look for Kereru, (New Zealand Wood Pigeons) and Tuis. A beautiful place to visit.
