“Great for a tramp or short walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 3, 2013

Plenty of interesting tracks available for a short walk or longer tramp. Check out the Watercare Train (Rain Forest Express) for a great ride through the Waitakeres.

“Aucklands Natural Weather Barrier”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 30, 2012

The Waitakere Ranges is a rugged range to the west of Auckland City and runs from Titirangi in the south to Swanson in the north. The scenic drive allows visitors to see from vantage points the Tasman Sea and then over Auckland City in the distance. The surf beaches of Piha and Karekare can be accessed from the Scenic Drive and the sealed roads are well posted.
There are many walking tracks in the ranges and the ranger station near Titirangi has all the information one needs. If walking the tracks take extra clothing and rainwear should the weather turn.
The Waitakeres are also the main water catchment area for Auckland City and large reservoirs can be seen near Huia. When a southerly wind blows and the clouds gather over the ranges and start to turn dark, every Aucklander knows it will rain soon.
Take a drive, take a walk, the natural beauty of the area and the bush is wonderful to see. Though I have put Jan 2012 as when I visited, I have not been to Auckland and the area since 2009..
