“Not so hard hiking, better if the weather is not hot”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 10, 2014

It's a vulcanic island with nice views from the top and some interesting small caves. Very nice to spend a day in the nature.

“A volcanic island close to the city centre!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 8, 2014

Great boat trip, excellent tour (tractor towed trailer) good guide. Walking requires more time and could be hard work in the heat

“Great Hike”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

There is an earlier 7.30am ferry on the weekends and public holidays, I recommend it. I took the path out to Mckenzie beach and up to the summit, it's much longer but has good views. I then went down the summit track which was more shaded as the island heats up. Good footwear is essential, the scoria tracks can be slippery in places. If you take the track to the lava caves it can be very rough in places but that made it an adventurous for me. Taking your own snacks and water is essential.

“Incredible Vistas of AKL and”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

We booked the " Rangitoto Volcanic Explorer Tour" directly through Fullers Ferry, in downtown Auckland, at the ferry docks office. The price includes your Round trip ferry ride and tour aboard a 4WD road-train to the summit cone. (or you can choose to hike the way up to the summit cone.)
We chose the ride up and a partial hike up to the Summit Lookout and Crater lookout with Lava Caves. Lots of history on this island and the vistas across Waitemata Harbour to Sky City are incredible.
Our guide was very good, informative and quite a sense of humor too!

Take water and snacks with you.

“Pristine Nature reserve is an absolute treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 7, 2014

Took the ferry from Auckland Central to Rangitoto Island, just a 25 Minute hop and you are on a Pristine nature reserve. Rangitoto Island was formed by a volcanoe that erupted 500 years ago. There are lava flows everywhere, and lava tubes to visit. It is quite a hike to the summit, but the hike was worth it. Trekking through the largest pohotokawa forest in the world and the view from the summit is to be seen to believed. The whole island surrounded by the Hauraki Golf is just so beautiful. Only one downer there is no shop!!!
