“Big Walk, worth it to tick the boxes”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 31, 2011

Good walk for those mildly fit to really fit. Nice views, crater is pretty impressive. Make sure you have an idea when the ferry is next in so you arent waiting for too long for the next one once you are done.

“Great views even in the rain”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2011

Views, the ferry trip across & eating my lunch on a volcano (extinct). TIP - book the early bird ferry trip to save money but you have to do this the day before you travel

“Take plenty of water & good walking shoes!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 29, 2011

The walk up and around Rangitoto I think is a must for all Aucklanders. Its fantastic that we have this opportunity to explore a real live, active volcano. I was absolutely fascinated with the amount of volcanic rock (yes even though it is a volcano...) & how so much vegitation can actually survive there. On a sunny day the hundreds of pohutakawa trees are stunning against the clear blue sky. Plenty of water is a must as there are no shops or refilling stations on the island, & on a hot sunny day you can go through this pretty fast (I had a 1.5L bottle & ran out of water). Take a torch if you want to explore the lava caves which are pretty cool. If you cant handle all the walking, there is also a road train that does tours around the island too.

“fantastic place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 28, 2011

I am over 70yrs old and went to Rangitoto Island on a Fullers trip you catch the ferry and then are taking around island on trailer that carries 20 persons pulled by a tractor to base of mountain and then you have to walk up to top only 349 steps up and down, well worth the effort, fantastic views over Auckland and hauraki Gulf on a fine day you can see for miles..Be certain to take water with you as there is no shops there..The cost was $59 -00 return..
