“Good hotel which could be better”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed February 1, 2011

We stayed here for almost 3 nights...so, got the whole experience of the place. Located very centrally so, you can walk everywhere. That is a plusss. Rooms are boutiqy but extreemely small. Fitting two suitcases for 2 of us travelling was a problem...there was absolutely no place left to move. We had paid for breakfast and then realised that cooked breakfast was not included...so basically it was cereals and bread and some basic fruits is all we could eat. We had to pay for eggs so, i really didnt understand the purpose of charging such high tariffs including in breakfast and not getting a cooked one. We travelled for almost 3 weeks in NZ staying at the best of places and this was the only hotel we found this in. Before reserving, we asked "is there parking"? to which we were told yes...so, we could park our hired car. What was not told is only their Valet can park or remove the car from their basement and we need to pay NZ $ 20 for every time he did it. This was billed to us during checkout and was really upsetting. Try and find better places to stay.

... Wished we had another night there. The space was immaculately clean and looks much better than the pix. We got our room on Orbitz so the price was upper midrange rather than high end, but we were extremely happy with hit. Pre-dinner cocktail was nice in their reading room which was nice and good chance to mingle with other travelers if you wish to do so. The service wasn't warm, but nothing to complain about. They're just probably going for the hipster attitude thing so had to live it up :)

This is a very stylish hotel in a great central location. Our suite was amazing and we had a wonderful nights sleep. The owner, John made a point of introducing himself and was personable. Some of the staff were very good indeed, most notably our dinner waiter on the 3rd Jan. The majority of staff were efficient but not particularly warm or friendly and one particular waiter stands out as the rudest person we encountered in New Zealand (breakfast 4th Jan).

Overall, we enjoyed our 2 night stay but would urge the owners to look at ways to ensure the staff attitude reflects the quality of this hotel.

Location is perfect. Individually styled shops, bars and cafes circle this hotel which is a 5min walk to the pier for Waiheke and 3 min from the main shopping street . The hotel itself is everything anyone could want for their first night in NZ. Superbly decorated and designed public areas & we had their basic double bedroom which came with a huge bathroom. Delicious breakfast and we only wished we had more time (ie a 2nd night) to try the restaurant for lunch or dinner.

Mid-century classic furniture and colors reveal the owner's training as an interior designer. The library is well stocked with interesting books, comfortable and historically interesting furniture, and wine. The restaurant serves excellent food; we had dinner there twice because the first night the food was so good that we knew we would be challenged to attain that level without any knowledge of other Auckland restaurants. I cannot rave about the service; the front desk staff seemed desultory and cooly polite. Having a design background, I twice asked to speak with Michelle, the owner, to talk with her about the hotel decor, but she was unavailable. The restaurant staff was excellent. If you love interior design and mid-century classic furniture, do stay here.

We stayed in this hotel after about 36 hours of travelling from Europe to New Zealand, it felt very good to come to such a nice hotel.
Although it is quite expensive, it had so many advantages, that I felt it was worth it.
The room was a good size and the bed was extremely comfortable. Internet was free, the location was perfect to explore the city and harbour by foot.
The free continental breakfast was great, fresh baked bread, fresh fruit salad, fresh muffins and other sweets.
I would definitely reccommend this hotel, even if it is a bit dearer in price than others.

How lovely it was to be back in this hotel - especially those wonderful individually styled rooms, the great service and re-visiting that brilliant restaurant atrium. I'm only sorry I could not stay longer this time!
