“A Wonderful Event”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed March 14, 2013

My wife and went to a fashion show at DeBretts Auckland last Saturday. It was part of the Auckland Festival. We had a lovely lunch as we watched the fashion show. My wife is a vegan and when we booked our tickets, I checked that she could have a vegan lunch. The chef was happy to oblige. Her lunch was delicious, as was mine. The service from bar staff and waiters was exemplary, attentive and made us feel very welcome.

We got to have a look at some of the suites ands rooms at the DeBrett Auckland, they were a wonderful mix of luxury, retro and funky.

Thanks again, we had a wonderful time, and will return soon.

Apparently back in the 80s this was one of the THE places to go drinking in central Auckland. In the 90s it became a real dodgy hangout. Now it’s out to be the city’s best hotel. (Note: some locals didn’t realise it had become this uber-chic hotel and still talked of it being a “dive” which this hotel certainly isn't).

Extremely well-appointed, very stylish, modern rooms sit alongside a more traditionally laid-out reception. Parts of the bar area look as if they were once in an outside courtyard which has since been covered.... that may be just for effect though and did remind me ever so slightly of a hotel in Las Vegas, but in a good way - honest!
.
The room was great: we spent three nights in one of the “basic” classic rooms which was plenty big enough for us: a big, very comfortable bed, plenty of closet space, a seating area and a bathroom which included a walk-in shower, twin sinks and one of the biggest baths you’ve ever seen!

Each evening between 6.30 and 7, guests are invited to partake of a drink in the Drawing Room. You can choose to keep to yourself but, if you’re going to bother to indulge, it’s far easier to join in and share sight-seeing experiences with the other guests.

The staff are very friendly and efficient (with one exception outlined below).

Valet parking was NZ$20 per night which is well worth paying given the hotel’s location.

Continental breakfast is included in the price (NZ$ 300 per night if you're wondering) and was the cause of one of two gripes I have. On a Sunday morning we arrived well before the end of service and several of the tables remained uncleared. The selection of bread, butter and jam was also severely depleted and it seemed to take a long time for the staff to get sorted (despite being asked). This did only happen on one day out of three but it was the cause of some irritation.

The other gripe I have is around wi-fi access whereby each room is given its own username and password. This means only one person can access the internet at a time: when one person is using it, the other person (or, I guess, people if there’s more than two of you sharing a room) can't. Towards the end of our stay we became aware of a guest who’d requested (and obtained) a second username but this wasn’t given as an option at check-in. Not a major problem but, in a hotel which is obviously aiming to be classed as one of the best in Auckland, I'd call it a bit of an inconvenience.

In the end though, despite these couple of reservations, I would definitely recommended Debrett as a very well-located, friendly and comfortable place to stay in Central Auckland.

Room Tip: I've seen reviewers suggesting avoiding the internal rooms as they overlook the courtyard meanin...

We stayed for one night and the reception staff we most obliging as we arrived very early (before 8.30am) into Auckland after our long flight from London. We were able to book in and were offered use of the lounge until our room was ready. As the other reviews mention, the wifi was excellent. We only had to wait an hour or so for our room which was quite good considering that most hotels don't allow you to check in until much later in the day. The room was absolutely beautiful with very quirky with retro furniture. The bed was sumptuous. We also looked onto the restaurant so felt it necessary to keep the blinds closed most of the time. Service and breakfast good, cleanliness excellent

Upon first walking in, this trendy art hotel is an oasis amid the chaos that can be Auckland CBD. Words such as intimate, cool, trendy, and quirky come to mind. The staff is awesome, and with such a small place (25 rooms), the service was there at our every turn. The rooms are nicely fitted out with the modern art deco theme throughout, including the sister establishments on the same street (Cornerbar, Housebar, Kitchen). It was an extra treat to have a complimentary drink in the private Drawing Room right after check-in, which we found out was a nightly occurrence. The room was so comfortable and nice to be in, you had to remember to leave to explore the city!

The rooms are very well soundproofed from the outdoor / street noise and the staff remembered us every day. Even our room next to the elevator / lift and overlooking the street was super quiet. The bathrooms were modern and super clean, however, I will say the "room" in the bathroom for the toilet is quite small, so hopefully you're not claustrophobic!!

If you do happen to be driving to Hotel DeBrett, the only parking available is street parking, so you might have to park far away or move your car according to the signs. The hotel is only a few blocks from the Britomart station, so public transport or a taxi is advised!

It's not the cheapest place in Auckland, but it is a GREAT place to stay, both for an excellent experience (whether staying in or going out), but also the beautiful building and vibrancy of the area surrounding. If you're lucky enough to book one of the 25 rooms, consider yourself in for a treat. I can't wait for our next trip to Auckland and our next stay at Hotel DeBrett!!

You don't get the glitz and glam of traditional 5 star hotels, but you get beautiful Art Deco interiors, and service and cleanliness that is up there with the best in the world.

The wifi is really fast (which is rare for Auckland) and the continental breakfast reminds you of a traditional country kitchen.

The rooms are beautifully designed and the bed is probably the most comfortable hotel bed I have ever slept in.

The service is very personalised from taking you to your room, to the little welcome note that has your name on it.

I have stayed in many hotels in Auckland but Hotel DeBrett will be the only one I ever stay at again. Screw the loyalty program's of the bigger brands. I'd rather miss out on the points and stay at a place that truly values your hospitality.

Spacious room, smart shower room, attractive antique pieces of furniture mingled with modern built-in wardrobe, fridge, coffee-making kit and bedside units, bright stripy carpet and brights used for accessories from mugs to cushions. As we looked over the interior courtyard restaurant we had to keep the curtains drawn, which meant living in a darker space than I would have chosen, and as we were jet-lagged from the flight from London, we did need to crash at strange times of the day in local terms.
Nice restaurant, we had a light lunch on our arrival (asparagus tart was good) and the breakfasts were also good - fruit, juice, cereals, pastries, croissants, bread/toast and excellent choice of tea/coffee all included and was plenty for us - anything cooked to order is charged extra.
The restaurant and the reception staff were all friendly and helpful about any enquiries - where to park our hire car, ferries to Waiheke Island, concert tickets at a local venue, looking after luggage until we were ready to leave etc. and the evening aperitif in the library gives a chance to meet other guests and learn more about places of interest from guests and staff.
We didn't use the hotel's corner bar, preferring another pub in a side street which was open later after we'd been out. Location very central to shops, banks, bars and a ten-minute walk to waterfont area for lots more bars, restaurants, shops and ferries. Stylish, comfortable with friendly, helpful staff and priced at the upper end of the range. We found the 10am checkout time inconvenient - we hadn't yet finished breakfast and we still had stuff to do in Auckland before moving on to our next stop- but NZ checkout times seem to be rather early by European standards.

Room Tip: Request a room that faces outside if you want to be able to open your curtains!

DeBrett has a beautiful interior design. The room was nice with a good bed. Small minus is we looked out onto the restaurant (and vice versa so no walking around the room naked). Bathroom was spacious, clean and equipped with shower and bath.

The complimentary drink every evening in the guest-only library was a nice addition and gave the hotel a home-like feeling. Free continental breakfast was basic but good quality food. Hot breakfast comes at additional cost. Free wi-fi is provided, a first in New Zealand in our experience.

Service was good, but can do with some improvement too. We asked reception some questions that they didnt have an immediate answer on. Promised to get back to us, but never did.
