“Chic Wedding Venue”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2012

We were lucky to stay at Hotel DeBrett as guests of a wedding held at the hotel. It was the perfect venue as the couple only wanted a small space for immdediate family at the ceremony and dinner, followed by a larger cocktail party for friends and extended family.

The hotel is very central, but once inside you don't feel like you are in the centre of the city as the hotel is a different world altogether. There are beautiful design touches everywhere, and the rooms are very stylish with a huge bathroom and rainhead shower with separate bath. Bed was very comfortable.

We enjoyed a wonderful degustation menu - food and wine were delicious and the service was superb. Special mention must be made of the restaurant manager who was excellent, especially for keeping us on time for the night's proceedings.

After dinner around 80 guests enjoyed a cocktail party and DJ. Hopefully all the rooms overlooking the central function/restaurant area were for wedding guests as our music was suitably loud, but the rooms are not totaly sound-proof. I imagine there would be no problems on a normal night, but may be worth checking if there is an event on if you get a courtyard room.

Continental Breakfast next morning was included and fairly basic although much more than just toast and cereal. Cooked breakfast was available for additional charge.

Only negatives were minor: I asked twice for an iron/ironing board to press a shirt before the wedding and they didn't arrive. Somewhat stressful when you are getting ready for a wedding. Also, there is no milk for tea/coffee. I appreciate you can ring down for some fresh milk, but sometimes you can't be bothered waiting (and I couldn't be certain we'd even get some). Also there is very limited drop off area for valet car parking as the entrance is literally on the High street footpath, but we were lucky to get a temporary park after 3 circuits of the hotel. That said, the valet parked and retrieved our park very quickly.

My wife and I agreed we'd love to stay again so we could have more time to enjoy the hotel and downtown Auckland.

Room Tip: Courtyard rooms are quiet if there is no event in the function area.

We arrived travel weary from a 12.5 hour flight to be warmly greeted and ushered into our classic room. It had everything we needed to freshen up and so much more.A welcoming, personalised note explaining the important information in addition to the usual hotel information brochure. The bathroom was wonderful with an excellent wet room and luxury toiletries and robes. The room was thoughtfully equipped with to meet all ones needs; gratis nibbles with a choice of drinks, teas and coffees etc. etc. We were invited to a free drink in the comfortable residents lounge with the owner and a chance to meet fellow travellers in a very relaxed atmosphere. We shared a table in the hotel restaurant to the continue chatter. Sadly we all agreed that although the food was wonderful, it was not substantial enough for hungry tourists.
However our 6am departure was preceded by a wonderful, generous breakfast on two trays brought to our room by yet another cheerful member of staff without the slightest sign of it being inconvenient.
The ambience is excellent in this superbly appointed hotel with plenty of personal touches. It has a convenient, quiet location with many shops and restaurants in close proximity. Go there and enjoy some superb New Zealand accommodation.

The hotel is in a great central location walking distance to the harbour and the casino. The art deco style is cool with contemporary colours and lines. The bathroom has a high quality finish with large bath and a shower head large enough for a good soaking. The bar and restaurant continue the theme complete with happy hour and a continental breakfast included. The staff at reception and in the restaurant are friendly and helpful. A definite winner

I stay in Auckland about once I month. I've tried them all, and DeBrett is the best hotel in the city. May not be the right hotel for someone who wants a "big hotel chain experience." But if you love Danish furniture and cool art deco style in a great central location then this is the place for you. The hotel is also surrounded by good restaurants, shops and trendy bars.

I have always found the staff excellent. The beds are right up there with Westin, and I love the funky black bathrooms. BTW, IMO the review that claimed bad service and bed bugs is a load of nonsense . . . after 20+ stays I think I would have noticed.

Room Tip: Rooms that open to the internal restaurant courtyard can be a bit noisy in the early evening if ther...

We stayed at the DeBrette Hotel for 4 nights before our cruise. Our Room (Room 2.5) was a very good size. Quality of the beds including linen and pillows are very important to us - and we would rank them high - extremely comfortable beds. The bathroom was large with both a tub and shower. The water pressure was very good. Free internet is a plus. The staff were very friendly and always helpful. The Hotel is well located - an easy walk to the harbour. It doesn't look impressive from the outside and as you enter the lobby, but the rooms and the dining area are very nice. I would not hesitate to recommend this hotel. If you want a wonderful tour while in Auckland, the Waitakere Tours is excellent (the owner Shane is your guide). They have a website that provides all the details.

Room Tip: Room 2.5 was large corner suite which was bright and had a large washroom.

We stayed at the Hotel DeBrett on our last night in New Zealand. It was the perfect way to end our honeymoon. The perfectly appointed hotel has impeccable service, fabulous mid-century décor and an intimate feel. Our experience started with the front desk staff member taking us to our room, showing us its features and then offering us a hotel tour. We then took advantage of the pre-dinner drink in the guests-only Drawing Room. The Drawing Room is a gem-within-a-gem at Hotel DeBrett featuring floor-to-ceiling bookshelves, DVDs you can take to your room, a record player with (gasp!) actual records, and a down-tempo vibe that's a perfect contrast to the bustle of Auckland just outside the hotel.

The rooms and beds are extremely comfortable and come with air conditioning, a benefit not found all over New Zealand. The bathrooms are out-of-sight and the Eithne Curran toiletries are just lovely. Definitely take advantage of the complimentary continental breakfast included with the room, for the food and the interior atrium in which the restaurant is located.

The hotel is located perfectly for a walk down to the harbor or up to the Auckland Art Gallery and there are plenty of cafes and shopping in the vicinity if you want to wander.

We'd go back to the Hotel DeBrett in a second, my only concern is that it could be an expensive trip as the fabulous mid-century design and furnishings may tempt me to redecorate my house.

In a country of such wonderful hospitable people, this hotel was a HUGE disappointment. It was the worst part of my 2 week stay in NZ. It is over priced, the staff were more concerned about talking about their personal life than helping guests, room service trays were left in the hallway all night stinking of food. And worst part- Bed bugs! I bitten all over.
Do not waste your money, there are so many other wonderful places to stay in NZ with wonderful people.
