“The best place to stay”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 3, 2012

Ascott Parnall is a beautiful place to stay. The location is ideal as you can enjoy the views over the harbour while having easy access to the city (including the gorgeous rose gardens down the road). The facilities are excellent, and Therese and Bart are amazing hosts. I can’t wait to go back. The breakfasts were divine and Therese and Bart gave me great suggestions on where to go and how to get around. Bart’s meet and greet service is also the hassle-free way to get from the airport.

When I think back on our trip to New Zealand, the most memorable part of the journey was having a lovely home away from home halfway around the world. We count our blessings we found Bart and Therese's bed and breakfast.

I travelled to Auckland last October to compete in a triathlon. I needed a place that felt like home, especially after swimming in the icy swells of Queen's Wharf, riding my bike against what seemed like gale force winds along the harbor, and running the streets of downtown in cold, pouring rain. While the weather outside was at times downright miserable, Bart's and Therese's accommodations gave us the contrast we needed -- warm, bright, cozy, clean, thoughtfully decorated with orchids abloom in every room. I remember at the end of the day, how good it felt to "go home" to our immaculate rooms, heated towels, and comfy white robes.

Bart and Therese are incredibly charming, delightful, caring hosts who treated my mother, husband, and me like family. Whether we needed to figure out the quickest way to get to a museum, the best places to eat Italian or Thai, where to buy New Zealand handcrafts in one hour or less, or how to see the rain forests and black sand beaches in 7 hours or less -- Bart and Therese were always there to point us in the right direction or make the needed arrangements. We especially enjoyed the breakfasts -- great food AND company AND my favorite Muesli cereal. And it touched my heart when the morning of my race, Bart was up at 4:30 am for the send off, handing me my ritual pre-race bananas and cup of coffee as I headed out the door.

My only regret is we couldn't have stayed longer. The next time we go to New Zealand, we will without a doubt be making reservations at Ascott Parnell.

Room Tip: All the rooms are wonderful!

Loved staying with Theresa & Bart as Ascot Parnell. Excellent destination for concerts at Vecta in Auckland. Parnell has lots of cafes and only a short walk from the b&b. Rooms were very comfortable and the breakfasts cooked by Bart both varied and very tasty. Theresa & Bart both collected & dropped guests off at the airport/ferries which I found to be an additional bonus. If you are looking for something more intimate and cosy than a hotel but also want privacy & your own space in an upmarket area of Auckland, I recommend this B&B. Would definitely stay again.

Outside of the UK I would not normally consider staying in a B&B but I couldn't find a hotel that I was fully satisfied with (based on price and reviews). So took the plunge and can say that we were not disappointed. After a 26 hour flight (clearly not looking out best and certainly not 100% awake) it was so nice to be met at the airport by Bart who drove us to the apartment, showed us our room, made some coffee and encouraged us to take some time out.
We had the garden view king room which came with a sitting-room. Plenty of room for just the two of us. Clean and spacious. Along with this there is also a communal sitting area and communal balcony area that guests are invited to use.
Breakfast was good too. A bowl of fruit that was prepared first thing, orange juice, cereal and then a choice of cooked breakfast (and there was plenty of choice). Vegetarians are catered for too. Guests can make tea and coffee in the kitchen at any time and there is always a well stocked biscuit barrel on the coffee table (which was raided daily).
There is an outdoor pool but even we Brits weren't silly enough to take the plunge in late September. We did see it from the balcony and it looked a good size.
Parnell is a good place to start out in Auckland especially as there is a regular bus service a few minutes up the road or you can walk in to city centre. There are some good local restaurants in Parnell as well which Bart recommended.
Ascott Parnell was more than a B&B. It really did feel like home. Bart and Therese really do welcome and treat you like family. Everything is so effortless for them. They couldn't do enough for you. We stayed for 5 nights and would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: The harbour view room looked amazing and we would probably book this next time.

Yes, the title is exactly what we found. This was the first place we stayed on a three-month journey and everywhere we were subsequent we rated it against our experience here. Bart and Therese keep this accommodation immaculate, spotless. Our room (harbour view) was enormous! The bath was amazing with heated flooring. Fuffy down comforter, writing desk, balcony overlooking Auckland, gardens, pool - we didn't want to leave. In fact, we asked for another night but no room so we were forced to explore the rest of NZ. We were spoiled. It didn't feel like the typical B&B but like family: lively conversations about driving in Auckland & doggie hugs. Very close to dining, walks to parks, marina and bus stops. Huge library full of books, brochures, you name it-it's there. If only there was a teleporter so we could zip there now for a visit. Sigh. WE LOVE YOU TWO

Room Tip: All are wonderful. Pick the harbour view one-it's more but HUGE and VIEWEY.

We are from the US and recently stayed with Bart and must say the experience was excellent and the facility and hosts were outstanding. Bart met us at the airport at 6:30 am and took us to the Ascot Parnell and we were able to check in and recover from the long flight before we ventured out to explore the area. Bart was very helpful with everything and a delight to talk with. We will stay here anytime we are in the area.

Room Tip: we had the the room with the best view which was well worth any extra fee .

We stayed six nights with Bart and Therese in their beautifully appointed home and were made to feel so welcome, it felt more like catching up with old friends than checking into paid accommodation. This is B&B at its best. Our king bedroom suite featured its own sitting room with a brilliant view of the Auckland sky tower. The ensuite bathroom featured heated towel rails and underfloor heating. There was even a torch in the bedside table. The shared living area and balcony afforded views over the city and the port...perfect for enjoying a glass of wine before walking around the corner to one of the many dining establishments on offer in Parnell village. Breakfast was a great social occasion to compare notes with other guests ( max number of guests is six) and get tips from our hosts about where to go and what to see. We were able to park our hire car in the security car park but found the green loop bus great for a trip downtown to catch a ferry (it cost $1.90 and runs every ten minutes). The hearty three course breakfasts kept us sustained for the whole day. After fresh fruit and cereal, we had fun choosing different offerings from the cooked to order breakfast menu. Both Bart and Therese are great cooks. All dishes were beautifully presented and the ingredients were market fresh. We are so pleased we chose to stay at Ascot Parnell. It made our trip a much more enjoyable experience.
