“Centrally located, adequate hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 7, 2014

The Kiwi International Hotel has a great location: right in the center of Auckland, on walking distance from all the main streets. The hotel was very neat upon arrival, with a cozy lounge area at the reception. It was a bit of a challenge to get to our room with a lot of luggage, as there are different stairs, halls and a very unstable elevator to navigate.

Our room was pleasantly large for two people, especially in comparison to the price. The bathroom, however, was extremely small, with a very weak shower.
Another downside were the seemingly thin walls; staff and guests were easily overheard if they were in the halls and/or the connecting rooms. Luckily, it didn't interrupt our sleep too much, which is most important in the end!

A heads up for guests with cars: we found there to be little parking space available. There is no garage, but a lot that is a bit difficult to navigate due to its limited size and pillar placement. When we we checked out and wanted to leave, our car was even blocked by someone else's - thankfully, the helpful man at the reception made sure it was removed as fast as possible.
The staff we met on our first day wasn't as friendly, though, so the quality of our service was rather varied.

All in all you do get your money's worth at this place, as it is a great budget option in the heart of a large city.

Thanks you for your comprehensive review. I'm sure intending travellers will find it useful. We agree that the parking can be tight if the hotel is busy - however it is free. Your final paragraph sums us up nicely... "All in all you do get your money's worth at this place, as it is a great budget option in the heart of a large city".

This is not a 4 star hotel but if that is what you want stay at a Hilton. The rooms are not large but they are adequate sort of European style. They are clean and a great value for the location. It is about 15 minutes from the town center and about 30 minutes from the ferry building. Some of the reviews talked about the uphill climb from the town center. Yes it is uphill but I am 73 years old and did not find it to be that bad.

Many thanks for the great review. We're glad our accommodation suited you well. I hope I can walk up Queen St when I'm 73! There's always the 50c bus if you don't feel like walking after a long day out.

We stayed for one night in May 2014 and booked this hotel as it was the cheapest option with an en-suite bathroom, parking and wifi we could find in a central location. Yes the rooms are a little on the small side and are a little bit old-fashioned but for the price we paid you couldn't really ask for more. Room was clean with fresh towels, we were given free wifi codes upon arrival and parking round the back of the hotel was no issue at all, plenty of spaces. 10 minute walk to the sky tower and a little further to reach the harbour. All boxes ticked!

Only complaint would be the wifi was a little on the slow side and on a couple of occasions the signal dropped completely but only a minor issue in what was otherwise a very comfortable stay.

Many thanks for the great review and your long term loyalty. A bit perplexed about the pricing comment especially given that we consistently rate No.1 on TripAdvisor in the "Best Value" category for Central Auckland hotels. Winter rates for our ensuites are the same as they were 5 years ago. We look forward to hosting you again sometime.

3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 9, 2014

My wife and I stayed at this hotel for five nights in February, 2014. I have a mixed evaluation of this hotel.
Positive
Considering that the hotel is located in a large and fairly expensive city, the price of the rooms was very reasonable and a very good value. If you are concerned about price, this hotel may be a good choice for you. The location is excellent. The hotel is located at the top of Queen Street, and you can walk to the central city area in about 15 minutes. The beds were comfortable, and the shower was nice. The staff did a good job of cleaning the room. When we had any questions about sightseeing or other activities, the staff was very helpful. In addition, there is an agent for a sightseeing service that is located in the hotel itself. We booked a tour with her help, and it worked out fine.
Negative
The elevator is a bit scary. It starts and stops with a jolt and a loud sound. The biggest negative that I have to say about this hotel is that we found that the following combination of noise producers made this hotel very noisy. (1) No automatic door closers. I do not mind that the hotel does not use air conditioners. Auckland has a mild climate with very few hot days, so it would seem extravagant to put in air conditioners. Because there are no air conditioners, the staff frequently opens doors as they are cleaning. This creates a breeze flowing through, which is fine. However, a negative result occurs when doors suddenly slam shut due to changes in air pressure. The hotel has done almost nothing to reduce the effects of slamming doors. The doors do not have automatic door closers, so all doors are closed by human force. You can just imagine the tiny percentage of guests that are thoughtful enough to close their doors gently so that the noise does not disturb other guests. Noise could also be reduced by putting little rubber bumpers on the door facing, so that when the doors is closed, they do not make so much noise. (2) Noisy staff. The hotel seemed to have a small staff. They started work early in the morning and did not finish cleaning the hotel until almost 6:00 p.m. The supervisor frequently spoke in a loud voice in the hallway to the two young people who were helping her, even though they were several doors away. Someone should tell that supervisor that it would be much more considerate of hotel guests, if she walked to her helpers and spoke to them face-to-face in a quiet voice. (3) A park that attracts hooligans. It’s nice to have a beautiful park next door to the hotel, but on two occasions over the five days, our rest was disturbed by a group of punks who gathered next to the hotel to drink, laugh, curse, and make noise. (4) Rude guests. Several times we were awakened by barbarians who were making loud noises in their rooms. It seemed as though they were having a party. On our final day, one Philistine in the room below us started playing loud music at 8:00 a.m. I cannot blame the hotel entirely for this problem. They cannot predict guests’ behavior. However, I would like to point out that the hotel, in theory, has a very strict policy about noise. As we were checking out, I noticed a small sign on the clerk’s desk off to the side, a sign that I had not noticed when we checked in. The print on the sign was small, so you had to pick it up to read it. It was a summary of hotel policies, including a very strict but reasonable noise policy. I think it would be a good idea for this hotel to make sure that all incoming guests are aware of this policy—they should give a copy to each guest—and what the consequences are for noisemakers.
In conclusion, this hotel is a fairly inexpensive place to stay in Auckland that is also ideal for sightseeing. However, if you are especially sensitive to noise, you might want to look for another place.

Thanks for your comprehensive review. Several of the points you make are valid and we are looking into them. February, when you stayed, is one of our busiest months with the hotel often running at 100%. We agree that some guests can be very inconsiderate which is frustrating to all of us - guests and hotel staff.
