“Excellent stay and good value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed December 5, 2012

We were very impressed with the service and standard and location of this hotel. Surprisingly quiet rooms for a downtown location. The restaurant was a lovely surprise with amazing food and views. Would definatly return to the Mercure Auckland.

A great location right near the bottom of Queen Street, and staff were excellent. Like it's neighbouring Mercure, the Windsor, which is just a minute or so walk away, the hotel did have some failings - although not as many as the Windsor. We had three rooms, all on the 6th floor, and the wallpaper was peeling off the main corridors on that floor. The elevator never stopped at a level that was parallel with the floor. Sometimes it was higher than the floor, and other times it was lower. If you weren't watching your feet you could have either tripped or fell. Our rooms were ok, comfortable even. The bathroom was oldish, but everything worked. The meal in the Vue Restaurant on the top floor was good, but wine selection was lousy. New Zealand has some brilliant wines, and it would have been lovely to marry a decent wine with the great view and good food. My pet hate about Accor is their WiFi policy, so these statements aren't necessarily confined to the Mercure Auckland. You can only access free WiFi in the lobby (which has hardly any seats) for 30 minutes per day and you have a download limit of just 8mb, which is ridiculous, stingy, mean-spirited and completely inadequate in this day and age when just about everyone travels with a computer device of some sort and needs to be connected for business and/or personal reasons. Fortunately, McDonalds was just next door so I went there and gave them my business. Accor markets itself as being `the world's leading hotel operator'. Rubbish!

Room Tip: Try tp get one above the 6th floor so that you'll have a view.

We spent our first two nights in NewZealand in the Mercure Auckland hotel. The hotel floors and rooms are a bit old and the bathroom was a bit shabby and had not been cleaned properly. But, after the long flight from Europe, we were exhausted and just wanted a bed to sleep in, so this place was fine enough. The lobby looks nice and the restaurant on the upper floor has great views and a nice buffet for breakfast. The biggest plus is the central location which is ideal if you only have one or two days to explore the city.

Room Tip: 7th floor has good views towards Ferry Building and the harbour

This Mercure is a stone throw away from its sister hotel, Windsor. Either ones are tucked away conveniently seconds away from Brittomart & the Quay. For those of you that are into bars/pub/restaurant/shopping scenes, this is as good as it gets. The Airport Bus also stops by here. For those of you that are to come to Auckland for a short respite, this is truly an ideal spot to be. What other reviewers said about the hotel is true, it looks old and tired. The moment you step into the lobby, there shall be two front office desks with front office staff checking you in. As expected of the Accor group, the service is swift & efficient but downright mechanical. There's no sofa lounge for you to hang around the lobby area, an indication that it's catering to major tour groups. The moment you step into the hotel room, you are stepping into the 90's. Lighting is an odd mix of eco & flouro lights. Wear and tear could be seen on the wall & requires painting. The cushions are faded in colour & seams are all broken. I struggled a bit looking for thermostat to adjust the temperature of the ventilation system & it's finally located by the windows that are overlooking the Viaduct (supreme view!) The bathroom is once again going down memory lane. They are clean and perfectly functional. In terms of location, Mercure reigns. Apart from that, its interior decor is below par, more of its Formula 1 range BUT I shouldn't complain considering that the rate is a mere $103. I can imagine that once the rooms are all done up, we will be looking at $200 plus per night. Being a hotel owner myself, I can also appreciate the fact that if the rooms are fully accounted for daily, how is the hotel supposed to do its much-needed renovation? Catch 22 indeed. Truthfully, beggars are not choosers. When we pay peanuts, we get monkeys but in this case, I get monkeys with view and location to boot. If I'm hungry, there's always 24 hours McD downstairs too:) One thing too, for light sleepers, the thermostat for the ventilation system is scarily loud. Whenever it's ticking off, it would do that with a HUGE bang BUT there's nothing we can do about that, can we now?

Room Tip: Ask for the room facing the Viaduct.

I stayed in three Accor hotels on this trip and all three failed to deliver. While the location is in the CBD, the crappy room an bathroom was a disappointment. The staff was very friendly, but otherwise a total fail.

A very handy hotel close to Public Transport. The bus from Auckland Airport is a 5 minute walkaway. The Britamart Rail Station and the Auckland Public Busses arrive and leave close by. We went to a concert at the Vecta Arena and this was just 10/15 minutes walk away. Good central location, room had good view and facilaties. Good value for money.
