“One of many”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 14, 2007

Unfortunately it wasn't anything special. The place didn't have a lot of character and the design was pretty basic. The location is good, but compared to other hostels in the city it's a bit further out. Some of the employees are very friendly, some are the exact opposite. The breakfast was good though (not free), and the lady who cooked/served was very very good. For New Zealand hostelling standard it's nothing more than average.

We stayed here for 2 nights, we booked through hostel world and had only one choice for a twin room - $23 per person per night, we thought this was cheap and were quite pleased. When we checked in the reception staff couldnt find our booking, when they finally did they didnt apologise for the delay. When we went into our room it was dirty and there was no linen, we told reception who STILL didnt apologise just observed that 'the cleaners are being slow today'.

That aside, the hostel was clean and kept clean. However there were several design problems, the kitchen was badly laid out and there was 1 plug between 6 sinks. Two of the 4 hobs did not work. The kitchen had no natural light and often smelt very strongly of cooking as the ventilation was ineffective. There was just one female shower and one male shower per floor which was woefully inadequate. There was one small tv room and the only other communal area was adjacent to the kitchen, there were just 2 sofas and the rest of the seating was diner style table and chairs which meant there was never anywhere to relax. We had 2 duvets each in our room but no heater and as such the air was always chilled. One of the beds was broken and listed dramatically towards the wall in effect rolling me off the bed.

The location is good. But the whole place needs a makeover and bathroom and kitchen facilities need to be completly renovated (eg - the toilet doors needed brute force to close and lock them, the shower tray was stained from years of use) as they felt grimy even though they were clean. We put all this in our feedback form and made it very clear we were leaving the hostel because it wasn't what we expected of a YHA. We relocated to the YHA International, one block down and actually closer to the city which was extremely well equipped.

We were quite disappointed by this hostel. We had read a number of reviews prasing this hostel and feel it has not lived up to these. We did have a few problems at check in, they had lost our booking and when we eventually got in our room it had not been cleaned / beds still made up for the last guests and when we told the desk they were very unappologetic, saying the cleaners were being slow (this was 6 or so hours after check out).
The floor we were on smelt of a mixture of damp and sweat and the beds are like hammocks. Our room was cold, we were given extra blankets but when you breath cold air all night and wake up due to it it's rather unpleasant.
The kitchen is small and numerous hobs do not work. There are plenty of fridges which is good to see and enough crockery.
The location is really good being a short walk to the centre of the city, however be warned if you're walking here with your backpack the hill is VERY steep up to it, but not too long.
There is a lack of living space which seems odd for a YHA.
Overall this is not what we had expected from a YHA and in the end decided to move down the road to the International YHA as it was what we had expected from the City one.
