“A complete dump!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed August 3, 2008

Usually when I write a review I try to list everything good about the place including all the things I would want to know. With this place there is only one good thing. Location. If you want to stay here and I would advise you not to, then read all of the below first.

When stayed here for 2 nights during our 2008 world tour. Everywhere we had stayed in New Zealand had been better than expected so it was a real let down at the end of our trip to suffer the ACB! I stress the suffer!

The only thing going for this place is it's location on Queen Street in Down Town Auckland. We read some of the reviews before booking and decided to take a gamble. I wish we had stayed else where.

We booked a double ensuite room which was very shabby and unclean. It's not a nice feeling to find other peoples toe nail clippings all over the carpet or about 1cm of dust pilled up on top of things. The bed spread was dirty, stank of smoke and had lots of hairs on it.

The windows were all locked and the only air coming into the room was from the air cond. Well it was air cond once! Instead it pumps into the hostel, dirty warm cigerette smoke from top floor so that you and everything you own smells like an ash tray!

The ACB dont seem to employe cleaners. They get residents to "Clean" rooms for them in return for a free stay. The job just does not get done and it shows everywhere you go!

The place stinks of weed! In fact people were smoking it in their rooms, bathrooms, lifts and hall ways. Tell the staff? Yeah Right, they don't care!

The kitchen is appalling! It gets a quick clean by staff overnight but come 10am it's a hole and thats the way it stays! By the time you come round to cook an evening meal its like the entrance to hell! If it was a comercial kitchen it would be shut instantly and the owners prosecuted! Upto 500 residents can stay at this place so look at the below and think to your self, is this acceptable?
3 X microwaves - none worked
3 X fridges - 2 broken
No oven
Gas stoves with no ignition, go to reception who give you 1 match
2 X tin openners - both broken and unuseable
1 X saucepan with a handle. No other to be found!
100 X saucepan/frying pan with no handle causing people to burn themselves, me included!!
Flithy, dirty drying towels. No clean ones available at reception
sinks blocked with food and pilled up with dishes.
broken chairs in dinning room
stained table tops

The reception staff were less than helpfull. 1 member in particular! It was disgracefull, how she dealt with an elderly couple staying there who for them hostelling was clearly a first time experience. She was rude and insulting! So much so that I had to tell her so, but she did not really seem bothered!

Will I be back? Yeah, if they decide to tear the place down or only if someone else takes it over and puts some money into the place. If it's still ACB? Not a hope in hell!!

VERY VERY EXPENSIVE!!
most staff are incredibly rude and miserable and very unhelpful!!
apart from the expense this place is generally very clean and we have a nice twin room but the air con is murder! totally ruins your skin and hair is also one minute very cold next very hot!!!

this place is also party central, if you want to save don't stay here! globe bar will happily take all your money!!!!

great location and only a 10 min walk to the harbour ferry terminal. Not your typical hostel. It is a large budget hotel in Auckland that has occupies floor 3 and above. Reception is on the 3rd floor and is reachable by elevators. There is a large communal kitchen and a large internet cafe on the 3rd floor as well as several tv rooms. The communal kitchen was clean and has a lot of stainless steel gas cooktops. The internet cafe has many stations and some voip phones (same access card as for the internet) and was open long hours. Each guest key has a magnetic tag that allows elevator access only to the floor where your room is as well as to floor 3 and the building entrance.

My wife, my son and I stayed for one night in a double room (queen bed) with a small ensuite bathroom. On 2 other nights we stayed in a double (queen bed) without an ensuite. Each floor containing private rooms has its own set of bathrooms and separate shower bathrooms. We never encountered any lineup for the bathrooms or showers. In the non-ensuite room, we could hear some noisy neighbors in the morning but this was a minor issue for us.

The staff was friendly and helpful. I had to change my room booking due to a flight delay and encountered no problems. I also used the baggage storage service at the internet cafe since I had a late flight. I did not personally encounter lineups at reception but I saw a few lines in the evening when only one clerk was available. Would stay there again.

  • Liked — great location, elevators, secure access, kitchen, internet cafe, staff
  • Disliked — signage is a bit small, easy to walk right by it.

stayed here a couple of times over the end of feb and start of march, just back from new zealand and have to say we enjoyed our stay and had no problems, we booked a double en suite room and thought room was fine and hostel was well located in the city. also had friends staying in dorm room who were moved when they had some problems but they all would recommend ACB, would recommend this place for couples, solo travellers etc.its a hostel so you expect noise at night etc but we didnt have any real problems with noise or anything else. rates are good on the rooms and also shuttle bus to/from airport make it easy to get to. rooms are clean and good kitchen to make your own meals, plus laundry area, all the things u need when travelling are catered for.

Getting there
There are little shuttle buses at the airport that goes to a lot of hotels in the city . Brings you right to the front door

Location
So central to everything, right in the middle of the city. You can walk to most of the big sights. Good thing for transport is the link bus for abou NZ$2 which goes around in a loop, comes about every 10 / 15 mins. Good way to see the K'road and parts that you maybe would see if you're doing a fly by visit

Room & Cost
Bunk beds NZ$22, Double room NZ$62. Special deal if you want to come back to ACB after travelling a bit and pay in advance you can get 20% off which means we got a double room ensuite for the same price as a regular room
Fridge in each room so you can buy things and keep them chilled so it can be cheaper to eat. Linen free unlike other hostels I've been to

Facilities
Great facilities, travel desk, 40 computer stations for e-mail so you never have to wait long at all. $1 for 15 mins, big kitchen, 24 hour reception, big clean bathrooms
Disadvantage - showers are the water efficient ones so you have to keep pressing the button to keep it on, but you get used to it. Also some of the bathrooms / shower rooms are unisex so be prepared and watch as you are coming out of the shower

Nightlife
Association with Globe bar next door, reception gives out vouchers for free drinks frequently
Has good nights like Miss Backpacker (Tues nite) and Mr Globe (Thurs nite)
Busy backpacker bar every night, great to meet people

Activities / sights
Sky tower was nice, restaurant at the bottom was averagely priced but had hugh portions. The potato wedges could do 2 people
Red Lion brewery was a fun place to visit. Very interactive and fun and you get to have a wee taste at the end in their beautiful bar. Wee bit out of city centre about a 30 min walk or a NZ$15 cab fare

I've stayed in numerous hostels and I would rate this one as one of the best. We never had any problems with anything although we did only stay one night while enroute to and from the south island

A lot of the rooms in this hostel have no windows, which is crap, especially if this is where you first stay when you get to NZ. It really adds to your jetlag since you can't tell if it is day or night outside.
This hostel is also really really big, you would probably be better off staying somewhere smaller.
On the upside, the location is great, in the middle of everything and it is really easy to get to from the airport (the bus picks up and drops off just outside). It is a good place to meet other people who have just arrived in NZ and are starting their trip.
I would recommend staying somewhere else in Auckland.
