“Best Showers in NZ!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 30, 2007

We stayed at Aspen House both at the start and end of our recent NZ holiday.
As a previous reviewer has commented, there is the most awful smell of sick as you approach hotel - sewers?
Check in staff friendly and helpful. No lift so it's a pain to carry heavy bags up to room.
Stayed in twin and double rooms - en suite.
The bed linen was supposed to be red/ white check but that had faded to pink/grey. The room was a bit like a prison cell - grey brick walls - a small window which did not open (more of that later) - very stark. However the bathroom was spacious and modern with the most fabulous 'wet room' area - and a wonderful shower - so powerful and with seemingly constant hot water. A far cry from the warm trickles and clingy shower curtains of other places.
The location is great for Queen St / Ferry area - but the steep street can be wearying.
Free Breakfast ok - toast, selction of jams, cereals, tinned fruit. You were able to pop down any time to make tea / coffee and reception manned 24 hours.
The main drawback was - the traffic noise which went on until early hours and the lack of ventilation - in spite of the noise, how I wished I could open a window for some fresh air - and this was in April - goodness knows how stuffy it would be in the Summer.
All in all - great value for money - great location - and fabulous shower!!!!!

Although this hotel offers reasonable value for money the accommodation is like a hostel. we had a double ensuite room in the newer part but the room was like a cell, obscure window high on the wall, and not enough light. Could be depressing if you stayed long! Breakfast was in a large hostel like room, poor quality ingredients and surly washer upper/kitchen hand. Conveyer belt Toaster was useless unless you like warm bread.!! Good location though for the limited sights Auckland has to offer. Decent restaurants hard to find nearby. With the fantastic scenery elsewhere in NZ 3 nights was more than enough here.

The smell of vomit as we emerged from our car outside of the hotel did not bode well! - That said, this is a very centrally located hotel (close enough to walk into the centre of town, wharves, or university ...as well as some of the seemier parts of town).

We stayed in a double room with ensuite (I understand that there are rooms with shared facilities as well). The room was very in a very funky warehouse style - bathroom had an industrial feel to it - shower had fantastic water pressure (just what these weary travellers needed on their last night in NZ).

Bonuses were free continental breakfast served on the ground floor from 8AM, and secure parking for an additional $10 (very handy in central Auckland).

On the downside it was noisy (the room we had was only one floor up on the street side of the building) - we were woken several times by voices of people on the street - so suggest if you book this place, ask for a room towards the rear of the building away from street noise.

Staff were very friendly and helpful.

Overall, not a bad place to stay, although I could not have hacked the noise if I was staying for more than one night.

  • Liked — Central location and modern/clean room.
  • Disliked — Street noise.

The staff at the Aspen House is extremely helpful and very friendly! We stayed in the hotel section for one night. The rooms are very clean and comfortable, but not fancy. The price was excellent; one of the best deals in Auckland.

We arrived in the morning, straight from an international flight. The staff was extremely helpful and found us an open room right away. They also helped us arrange transportation and activities throughout our stay.

The hotel is a bit far from the CBD, and there is quite a steep hill on the way back. However, if you don't mind walking, it's a great choice. It's also on the AirBus route for easy access to and from the airport.

Aspen house was perfect, especially if this is your first stop in NZ. The reception is manned 24 hours and the staff are friendly. We arrived there early hours of the morning and it was good to see afriendly face after flying for 23 hours. The room was a double with ensuite and was great. The breakfast was really nice and relaxed and it just gets you ready for your holiday. Perfect location to walk in to the centre of Auckland. Enjoy your stay!

Good place for price. Good location. We stayed in hotel style rooms, not the backpacker area. Might be hot in the summer, but we were there in the late winter. Front desk friendly, helpful, and efficient. Nothing fancy, but just fine.

Great spot very handy to Queen St and Wharf. The room is basic, but spacious and clean (I booked a room with ensuite). Friendly helpful staff. On the bus route for airport bus (though airport bus is not always on time!). Great value in the inner city. I will book there again next time I'm staying in Auckland.
