“Awesome on a rainy day”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

We went here on a rainy day and were glad we got the chance to see all the history and Maori artifacts. The Maori performance was very interesting and informative. Make sure you get a seat near the front!

“Beautiful building and great setting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

The museum has a great collection of Polynesian art and history. The National Geographic photograph exhibit and WOW exhibits were also amazing.

“Good way to get a feel for NZ”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2013

Nice museum gives you a good overview of NZ history. Well worth a visit and only $5 to get in. Hop on Hop off bus stops here for change over to auxillary line.

“Impressive Maori artefacts”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 23, 2013

This small museum houses some impressive Maori artefacts on the ground floor, including a stunningly beautiful meeting house, an elaborate store hut and a huge war canoe. The exhibits are very well displayed and explained, in English and Maori. The natural history section on the second floor has a fascinating (and scary) exhibition on Auckland's and New Zealand's volcanoes, as well as a reconstruction of the giant Moa bird and examples of the local flora and fauna. I did not visit the War Memorial section on the second floor but it is said to be very moving. There is a good cafe in the atrium, a very effective modern addition that echoes (on a much smaller scale) the glassed over courtyard of the British Museum in London.
