We booked a Bed and Breakfast package at Rydges for our wedding anniversary on the advice of a friend and were very pleased we did. The hotel is very centrally located just a few minutes walk to Queen St, Sky City and the Viaduct. We had our car valet parked - a bit pricey at $28 overnight, but convenient and fast on arrival and departure. We were upgraded to a Deluxe room with a late checkout of 12 noon as I am a Rydges Priority guest. Unfortunately the hotel was very full as it was a long weekend, so we couldn't have a room with a Harbour view, however we were given a 13th floor room with a city view and a great view of the Sky Tower. Check in is on the 1st Floor...a little strange....no Lobby at the entrance, just a concierge/carparking desk and public seating area.
The rooms look as if they have been newly refurbished and everything was spotless. The LCD screen on the wall welcomes you by name when you switch on the TV. Cool! The room had a King 'Dream' Bed which was quite soft, but I actually prefer a firmer mattress and found I had a bit of a sore back the next day. However my Husband loved it.
There was a two seater couch and coffee table and a desk with internet connection, which we didn't use. The mini bar was well stocked and the wardrobe had two white bathrobes and an iron and ironing board and safe. Shower over the bath, nice NZ toiletries, which you could purchase larger versions of if you liked them. Hairdryer in bathroom. Air-con efficient and quiet. Breakfast was buffet style from 6.30 - 10.30am on the ground floor in the restaurant. Fabulous buffet, which included a selection of cereals and dried and fresh fruit and nuts and seeds with yoghurt. Miso soup and rice. Either scrambled or poached eggs, sausages, bacon, lovely braised mushrooms, grilled tomatoes, potato croquets and corn fritters. A selection of cold meats with a variety of sauces. A variety of breads, which you could toast on an open toaster yourself, plus rolls and pastries. Fruit juices included orange, pinapple, apple, spirulina and raspberry. Perked coffee was freshly made and there was a selction of different teas.. The waiting staff were friendly and attentive and everything ws filled as soon as it was half empty. For NZ$135 for the package we thought this hotel was very good value for money. We really enjoyed our stay and will definitely stay here again.

Dear Jaxdan,

Congratulations on your wedding anniversary. It is fantastic to hear that you enjoyed your stay at Rydges Auckland and that you especially enjoyed our extensive breakfast buffet.

We are happy to advise that reception is now located back on the Ground Floor which we agree is a more convenient location.

We look forward to welcoming you back to Rydges Auckland in the near future,

I always stay at the Rydges in Auckland and am never disappointed. It is well located to the main street (Queen) a couple of blocks from the casino and a short walk to the harbour which has some fantastic restaurants.

The hotel offers great value, through the priority guest system I received a room upgrade and free internet during my stay. So check out the internet deals available when you book.

If I was to list any negatives it would be that it doesn't have a fitness centre or pool. You can get a free pass to a gym about 5-10 minute walk from the hotel, which is sufficient. The hotel seems to be undergoing some new construction, so maybe there are some changes coming in the future.

You won't be disappointed!

Our room was fantastic. The hotel was clean, quiet, and close to everything. We were able to walk to the viaducts (harbour), and the buses ran just a block away. I could lay in bed and watch people jump off the skytower. It was a great room for the price.
The valet parking was fairly expensive, you had to pay full price everyday even if you didn't move the car, but other than that there were no complaints.
I would definitely stay here again.

May 31, 2009 | Trip type: Family

14 of us stayed at Rydges in Auckland as part of an extended family vacation. We had just arrived from a 20 hour overseas flight. We unpacked, and went out for a walk around town and a bite to eat. When we returned, my 11 year old son's brand new iPod was missing. It had been plugged in to be recharged (unfortunately, in plain sight), and it was taken. We immediately reported it to the front desk. The young manager in charge investigated, and found that there was some 'suspicious' activity (ie: that one of the staff had entered more than once, or at a time that was unusual). Unfortunately, but not surprisingly, he did not locate the stolen iPod.
We also had a bad experience with being locked out of the same room that evening. Something happened with the electronic key lock, and it wouldn't open the door. We ended up having to use a coat hanger and my brother-in-law was finally were able to open the door with a coat hanger -- just before the maintenance manager came in (on his off day, I should add). We were exhausted (after having flown half-way around the world), and all we wanted to do was go to bed -- which we couldn't because we couldn't get into our room. Needless to say, this experience, on top of having the iPod stolen, left a horrible taste in our mouths.
I should add that the manager did try to make it up (he gave my brother-in-law a bottle of wine for opening the door to our room), and he did upgrade us on our next visit, but the overall feeling we had was very bad.

Dear worldtraveller1111,

We would like to apologise for the fact that we experienced issues with the door lock of your room. We do appreciate that this was very inconvenient and not what was expected of our hotel.

We are sorry to hear that the Ipod was not located after our discussion. A review of the lock audit was completed and the hotel was unable to identify any abnormal activity. All staff who entered the room were interviewed and we cannot find any evidence to support claims of theft by these staff members.

We do hope to be able to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Rydges Auckland on a brighter note in the future.

Emma Davies

Really good location, but we were not told about the building site out the window during our stay. Slightly dodgy taxi service at this hotel. On leaving, we enquired about a bus to the airport, and were told by the hotel reception that it was worth getting the taxi as it was only $35. We left our bags with the hotel and were told when we returned to pick up the bags, we could book a taxi for $35. The concierge booked the taxi, but on arriving at the airport, the taxi charged us $70. On informing the hotel of this, we were told that we should have specified 'discount taxi' on booking. We were not told about this secret password, and surely all the hotel guests should receive the good deal, why isn't it be the default? On raising the issue, the hotel were very unhelpful and took days to respond to our complaint. But the location is great - guess you can't have everything!

Dear theeasters,

It is great to hear that you enjoyed the location of the hotel.

We do appreciate that the misunderstanding with the taxi ordering was inconvenient to you. I can however assure you that this was not a scam and was simply a misunderstanding from our team.

We had advised at reception of a specific taxi company who offers a special deal to the airport. When concierge in another area of the hotel were approached and requested to book a taxi, they unfortunately did not realise that this specific taxi company was required therefore ordered a regular one.

I am happy to advise that a refund was processed to your credit card for the difference in taxi fares and we are ensuring that at concierge we ask all guests if they have a preference/requirement for a taxi we order.

We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to Rydges Auckland in the future.

Regards,

Emma Davies
