“central hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 12, 2011

As this hotel was central i thought it would be ideal , however our room faced onto main street and was very noisy, there was a bar closeby that had music playing until 5am , then as i thought thank goodness it was finished the street cleaners started emptying all the bottles from nearby bars into the vehicle which again was very noisy, i have to point out that although in our late forties we enjoy a night out and dont have a problem with people enjoying themselves but it was a bit much night after night, We asked to be moved to back of hotel and this was no problem and the staff were very helpful, Parking in central Aukland is very expensive but the hotel had a very small carpark in the basement of hotel, although they charged £20 a day this was a bargain compared to other parking areas.

Room Tip: ask for room at rear of hotel

As a kiwi this place was embarrassing. The room we had was quiet and clean with a good view. The hotel overall though is too old and needs a total refurbish. Its sooo 1972 :-(.

I didn't realise Auckland was such a hilly city, and the Best Western is in the middle of one. Uphill from Queen St (beware if you have asthma like me, mucho huffage & puffage) but downhill from the Intercity Bus Terminal and SkyCity Tower - 1 block away. I stayed for 3 nights, one of which was a Saturday, oh boy! Good points: huge king sized comfy bed & pillows, fluffy towels, microwave, toaster, lge digi telly, plenty of toiletries, shower OK, large room, 2 fast lifts. Very close to shops, Sky City Casino & Sky Tower. The Britomart(trains) plenty of buses & seafront ferry's, small Westfield Mall, all a few blocks down Queen St. Airport Bus, Queen St, runs approx. every 15 mins, great service $16 one way & 40/50 mins to Int.Airport. Bad points: Pay for In House movies, pay for in room safe (outrageous) lack of shelving in bathroom to put "your bits & bobs" on. Hotel on busy West Victoria St, sirens day & night, traffic noise - windows didn't block much out, I was on lucky 13th floor. Opposite hotel is a bungy contraption of all things, much yelling & screaming going on, and then there were the 'night people' as I called them. There is a car park just over rd from hotel with night club behind it, "youngies" were emerging until all hours of the early morning making a lot of noise. The last I heard was at 5am, Sun.morn. So beware, take your earplugs like I did, you'll need them. Wouldn't stay here again even though reasonable rate. They did store my bag for me after check out "at no cost".

Room Tip: Ask for a room at the back of the hotel, where hopefully, you will not experience as much noise, be...

Went for the Auckland Marathon and initially chose this hotel because it was affordable. Rooms were in good order and clean, staff were very helpful and friendly. The hotel is situated in the middle of everything, literally meters from restaurants of all nationalities and many of Auckland's attractions.
I had read in a review that the lower floors had a tendency to be noisy on the weekends. We stayed on the first floor and I did wake up in the early hours on a Saturday morning and could hear a little bit of screaming from the bungy ride attraction situated across the street from the hotel. I didn't wake up because of it, and to be honest it sounded quite distant; it may however pay for light sleepers to seek out a higher floor. We will certainly be staying here next time we come based mostly on location and the fact it felt a bit like home after the first few days. For would be Marathoners its a ten minute stroll to the ferry that takes you to the start point.

Room Tip: Light sleepers should choose a room on the higher floors

We stayed for one night in October 2011 and found this hotel to be good value for money. The amenities were clean and the staff were very friendly. I agree with other visitors that the rooms were basic but it had everything we needed, including buffet breakfast which also was simple but very nice. The staff were very friendly and helpful. It was a 2 minute walk to the Sky Tower where we had dinner - a must-visit destination if you're in Auckland. Great food and service at the Sky Tower restaurant. The only issue we had with this hotel was that the entry to the car park was not very well signed as it is right in the middle of the city. We eventually found the car park and it was a tight fit to say the least. Luckily our hire car was small. When we went to park, another car was in our allocated space and so we had to park in someone else's space. After advising reception we had to go back and move our car to another different space yet again. It was not a huge issue but after a flight from Australia and a mammoth traffic battle from the airport through peak hour it was slightly annoying having to stuff around with re-parking the car. We were also woken up during the night by drunken people shouting and singing down at street level, but this was nothing to do with the hotel. Overall, a good place to stay and well positioned within walking distance to city sights.

Stayed here with a friend for several nights in mid March of 2011. The lobby and front desk are right in off of the street which was most helpful. The desk clerk checked us in after a delay from a large party checking in ahead of us, gave us our room key and we were on our way to our 14th floor room. Once inside, we ran into a slight problem of not being able to turn on any lights, went back to the front desk and got the orange key needed to activate power to the room - problem solved.

The room came with 2 beds and a view overlooking the bungee jump on Victoria Street. Our first night was uneventful as we were tired from our trip into Auckland and so we spend most of the evening resting. The controls for the tv set were difficult to operate (either the keyboard remote wasn't working properly or something was blocking the signal), but we managed to get some channels. Reception was clear, possibly due to our elevation. Lots of local wifi signals were detected by my laptop, but none would connect at our height and so we had to pay for the hotel's wifi. Having to pay wasn't fun, but at least the connection was fast and consistent.

The beds were comfortable and the sheets were fresh. Bathroom was adequately furnished for our stay and space was not an issue. The bathroom does have a sign indicating that each room will have 15 minutes of warm water per hour. This wasn't an issue for us, but it could be an issue for others, so bear this in mind and try to budget your shower time wisely. There was a kitchenette in our room which was helpful for preparing and eating meals. The building is adjacent to a small convenience store which appeared to be open 24 hours. This was convenient for getting snacks and drinks as the snack bar/vending area in the hotel left a little something to be desired. There is also a small gift shop by the hotel entrance which is stocked with a lot of nice things from all price ranges to take home. There are also plenty of bus stops and small restaurants to eat at all on the same block as this hotel. It is also a short walk away from Sky Tower and the InterCity bus terminal.

The only downside to this place was the close proximity to the bungee jump which is across the street. I couldn't tell what the hours were on the ride, but we heard riders well past 2am. This wasn't much of a problem for me as I am a heavy sleeper, but those who are light sleepers may want a room which doesn't overlook Victoria Street. On the other hand, this can be somewhat entertaining watching (and listening to) people of various levels of intoxication go on this ride.

Bottom line: I liked this place. It's not perfect, but it was a lot nicer than I expected for the price we paid. The staff was helpful and quick to correct any errors they made. They also helped me to mail a postcard to a cousin in Sweden and were also quite generous in extending our stay by a few hours so we wouldn't be camping out at the airport for the entire afternoon to catch our 10pm flight back to the US. The close proximity to Auckland CBD and other major attractions is a definite plus to this hotel and I wouldn't have any qualms with staying here again or recommending it to a friend or relative.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking Victoria Street may face on to the bungee ride. If you are a light sleeper the...

Stayed on two off one night stops while touring North Island. Room pretty basic but all functional. Perhaps chance but both nights had lobby full of schoolchildren on some kind of trip which made the lobby and lift lobby on floor quite noisy.

Beds not particularly comfortable and coupled with noise from lift lobby meant a disturbed night both times.

Good location, and plenty of good eating around. Just run a search on trip advisor here and you will find plenty in walking distance.
