“Nice location and service, terrible rooms”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 2, 2007

Very centrally located at Auckland for walking around the city. Service was good with no exceptions from speedy front desk and friendly restaurant to excellent concierge. Breakfast was nice, but a bit over priced.

Lobby and other public areas are quite polished and nice looking, but rooms were extremely spartan and very worn. Housekeeping would also require some attention, we actually found a white tennis sock from our bed lining on the first evening!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 24, 2007

My husband and I stayed for 2 nights at the Crowne Plaza in February. We had a lovely, spacious, clean room with 2 queen beds and a lovely bathroom. The room was comfortable and very quiet. The hotel is very convenient to the town and attached to a shopping centre.

There was a great selection for dinner on the a la carte menu and the food was beautiful. On our first night we were told that we could eat what we wanted from the a la carte menu as it was included in our price. (We were part of a tour group). However when we had finished the meal the same member of staff came over to our table and apologised and explained that we would have to pay for the meal as it was not included. On our second night I don't think the staff could cope with the crowds as we had to wait for well over an hour on our dinner. A lot of customers were complaining about the lack of service/food on that particular evening. Also on the previous evening we had been told by reception that we did not need to book the restaurant so we thought that we wouldn't need to book a table on the second evening. We were wrong. We were told that we should have booked as there were no tables available until after 9.00 pm.

Great selection of food at breakfast and it was lovely. However, the staff could not cope with the crowds on the second morning - there were no seats available for guests.

On check-in we were asked if we had a reservation made as they could not locate our booking. They eventually found our details. Also, we had a problem locating our rep and the reception staff were not very helpful. Finally, Nigel, the concierge came to our rescue - he was more than helpful in tracking down our rep.

There was also a problem with the key cards for the hotel doors. Everyone had to insert the cards 3 or 4 times before the door would open.

Other than the above problems, food was lovely and the hotel was lovely - great view from the lift.

  • Disliked — Slow service in the restaurant and not overly helpful reception staff

We stayed here the first 3 nights of our 3 week honeymoon and arrived about 7am, exhausted and hungry after our 20 hour flight. At check-in we were told that our room would be ready shortly, so we hit the cafe for a HUGE breakfast which was delicious! Not 3 minutes after we signed the bill, our room was ready. We settled into the comfy beds for a restorative nap.

The staff was accommodating, the room was clean and comfortable, and the hotel was in the middle of all the action! I have nothing bad to say and would stay again in a heartbeat. As for the price, we used hotel points, so I can't comment on the value.

The reviews on Trip Advisor were raving, so we didn't even hesitate when we booked the Crowne Plaza, Auckland for the first night of our honeymoon.
1. When we first arrived, there was nobody outside to help us with our luggage.
2. When we went to check in, the woman said that their hotel website hadn't been able to charge my credit card, therefore they would need to charge the room to the card now. (Why did they not telephone me to say there had been a problem??)
3. They knew we were on honeymoon. All the other hotels we visited after made a special effort to give us a nice room, a room on a higher floor, even complimentary breakfast! The Crowne Plaza put us in the smallest, crappiest room they had!!
4. There was no safe in the room. Everytime we wanted to secure something, we had to go down to reception.
5. The atmosphere in the hotel was next to NOTHING!!!

Shall I go on??

Ok, to say something good...umm...checking out went very smoothly!

P.S. the location was good.

We stayed at the Crowne Plaza Auckland for 4 nights in Jan and were impressed by the good location, cleanliness, friendly helpful staff and the views (that lift is cool!). We went for the Club Room and it was well worth the extra few pounds - these rooms are on the 27th floor - they are very spacious and comfortable and included excellent breakfast, free internet access and, if you are so inclined, free drinks and nibbles between 5 and 7. Will stay there again

I would recommend Soul bar and Bistro in the Viaduct Harbour - very hip. For the people watching, check out SPQR on Ponsonby Road.how very rock and roll.
Dine at the Sky Tower was unfortunately all booked out so we ate at Orbit and good also - and if you are eating in the restaurant ....you don’t need to pay the fee ($20 fee) to get up to the tower. Bargain!

Also taste as many Pinot Noirs as you can - it is such a pity we cant get more, at more affordable prices, in the UK

We received a friendly welcome at the hotel and the concierge staff were pleasant and helpful throughout our stay. I was a little disappointed with the quality of the rooms we had. They were a little tired looking. There were unsavoury stains on the bedsheets and the carpet looked worn. When we arrived there was a towel on the floor underneath the sink, because it was leaking. However, when
we reported this it was quickly fixed. The breakfast was nice and my children liked the lift!

Pretty much what you’d expect from a Crowne Plaza – not over the top, but a very solid hotel. Very clean and modern, with everything in good working order. A large and well-equipped bathroom. Two individually controlled ceiling-mounted reading lights over the bed were a nice touch. One minor nuisance (and my only complaint) -- the only ice available is a small cube tray in the freezer of the minibar fridge. Ours looked like it had collected about a week’s worth of frost on top of the cubes without anyone noticing. The only alternative was to call room service, which wasn’t an appealing option. That's a minor complaint, though. Everything else was great.
