“Attentive Friendly and Helpfull Staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed February 20, 2014

We stayed a night in January and vacating the Langham. The difference was immediate upon check in and only improved during our stay. We had a superior room with marina view that needed maintenance, after speaking to reception staff we were upgraded to a luxury room also with marina views for the same cost with no hesitation from reception staff. Breakfast was included in room tariff. Dinner at the restaurant was wonderful, slightly expensive but worth very cent. Some aspects of the rooms are in need of a refit and hot tub in pool area was not working properly, other wise a great stay made possible by the helpful and friendly staff in all areas of the hotel.

Room Tip: If there is a problem with anything, speak to reception, we found all you have to do is ask.

Stayed here recently for a week.

The pro's:

-We were given a fantastic room, with internal water views and a beautiful view of the Sky Tower
-The bed and pillows. Very comfortable!
-The excellent, professional Sabrage Bar staff, who made most of the other staff at Sofitel look like they were working in a casual backpackers
-Turn-down service was great, apart from the one hesitant girl, who, on two separate occasions, was unsure if she could return in 10 minutes to do the job, once we were actually out of the room
-Daily chocolates on the bed, a nice touch

The Cons:

-Heard staff swearing a couple of times
-On checking in, no one bothered to greet us, even though, what appeared to be the manager, was right there with another member of staff, not serving anyone else
-The location really is completely out of the way and not as close to the Sky Tower and city centre as we thought
-At SoSpa, at the end of your treatment, they take you to a room to "relax", with absolutely no privacy, as others are right there next to you - awkward
-The key-cards failed to work on most occasions
-The Fitness Centre only has one cross-trainer, that was being used on most days, by guests that wanted to stay on it for an hour
-Very expensive accommodation for the service you'll actually receive

Overall, did we enjoy our stay? To be honest, yes - although a 5-star experience, it most certainly was not!

This was a hotel we chose to start our month long visit to New Zealand, a chance to spoil ourselves and set off on the right foot if you will. Sadly the Sofitel Auckland disappointed on so many levels, but lived up to standards on others. The first problem was upon arrival. We had especially requested a harbour view superior room many months prior when we booked. Instead we were allotted one which looked into (and others looked into us) an internal quadrangle. Upon question the girl at the desk (who I will refrain from naming) said the others were all booked and anyway we had booked with Qantas, not through their website! We were astounded to say the least and no doubt their booking partner, Qantas, would be too. The manager worked hard to fix the situation and gave us two breakfasts which was kind but did not alleviate our disappointment. The front desk continued to not know where simple things like public post boxes were and left us with no confidence that they had checked properly when a camera was left/lost in the hotel. The room, bed and bathroom were very comfortable indeed in all aspects and if we did not have to have the curtains drawn for privacy all the time might have stayed in it more. The breakfast room was light and airy and the people running it were efficient and friendly and the food lovely. The staff all saying the French "bonjour" constantly is very odd. Why, since they are the gateway to New Zealand don't they say "Kia-Ora"? If I went to Paris and the people there said the italian "Bongiorno" don't you think that would be odd? We tried to get the front desk to print an important travel document that came to our computer but try as we might they were completely unable to do so. A tiny motel in Gisborne managed to do it in a flash! The concierge boys were helpful, prompt and cheerful, a nice comparison to the girls on the front desk. It is important to note if this is important to you that although the Sofitel Viaduct promotes itself as being harbour front it has only one small side of its hotel facing there - the vast majority of rooms are street view or internal facing. On the plus side is that the position of this hotel is excellent. It is within easy flat walking distance of the Viaduct eating precinct and harbour where tour boats leave from. Position wise you would be hard to do better and if your expectations were not as high as mine then the rooms are all you could hope, breakfast is great, there is a lap pool and spa. The choice is yours.

Room Tip: Your request makes no difference to them but ask for harbour view and you might be lucky

Recommend to visitors to Auckland. Well positioned hotel with the usual standard you get from Sofitel. Bathroom and beds were lovely and the view was spectacular over the water. Very comfortable and good value particularly after a long flight from the US.

Room Tip: Ask for a water view

Stayed here on our honeymoon and had a great time. (Our second stay this year). Great room, great service. The bathroom is beautiful and the bed/pillows comfortable. The robes were lovely and we could relax easily. We had room service delivered on a portable table which was fun. Food was really good. We had breakfast in the cafe which was nice (we skipped the restaurant this time as the food was overpriced and not great last time)

We were provided some chocolates and a welcome drink which was very nice.

Would stay here again happily
