“Apartment nice but prefer view”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 31, 2011

I liked the space & facilities of the apartment, the exposed concrete walls of the public spaces, the dramatic foyer & the cheerful people at the front desk.
I only found out that you have to remove your entry card from the electrical slot to stop the noise from the fan after I'd had a night with very little sleep. i would have liked to have known that on check-in. Also, the fitout of the rooms is pretty standard, but fitting the price.
The main thing I missed was a harbour view - next time I think I'll go to a hotel that has that.

Stayed here in April in a one bedroom apartment, booked for two nights but stayed for only one.

The good:
Clean and tidy room
Big shower
Cool couch
Affordable

The bad:
The 'air-conditioning' was actually a heat pump, which only cooled the lounge area and not the bedroom (it was located in the kitchen area); so woke up many times during the night as it was so stuffy and hot, despite sleeping with both bedroom doors open.
The fan for the heat pump is RIGHT OUTSIDE the bedroom window, is extremely noisy and didn't turn off. We tried turning the pump off to see if the fan would stop, and it didn't unfortunately. We also received mixed advice - when we checked in we were told that if the swipe card was not in the holder on the wall, there would be no power to the unit. Then we were told that if we took the swipe card out, the fan would turn off. I queried then having no power, but was told that we would have power even though the card was out (what?..). Despite having the card out, the fan still stayed on.
The rooms, despite what the website says, are not double glazed (we know what double glazed looks like, they are most definitely not double glazed). The hotel is located on quite a big intersection/motorway off ramp so the traffic noise was awful.
The bed was hard and lumpy and pillows were not fabulous either, and there were two doors into the bedroom as the bed touched wall to wall, so you had to enter a different door to get to each side of the bed.

We asked in the morning to move rooms due to the noise from the road, and the fan. We were exhausted. We were told that the hotel was full so they could not accommodate us, so we asked if we could get a refund as we could not cope with another night there. Our romantic weekend away had not gotten off to a good start! We were initially told no due to their cancellation policy, but because the hotel was not satisfactory I felt we were entitled to some sort of refund. He said he would get the Manager to contact us to discuss, it has been around six weeks since this happened and we have heard nothing, hence why I am finally posting this review. We were also not refunded the $18 for the second night of parking we paid for, which we are definitely entitled to.

I picked this hotel based on the reviews here, and I was surprised with the service and issues we had. And this is definitely at the same hotel, as I double checked when we got back!

FYI, there are two parking options if you don't get to park there. One parking option was up the road at a Wilson parking building, and it was $18 per night to get in/out access. If you wanted to park for the night, it was a block or two away and cheaper.

Thank you for taking the time to register your feedback. I am unsure without the dates of your stay as to why we were unable to offer you an alternative room. This would be our normal procedure along with a refund if we were unable to offer an alternative. This does have to be authorised by the Duty Manager and in most cases needs to be processed back through the relevant on-line booking channel if booked and pre-paid in that manner. Apologies for the unsatisfactory service you received in regards to this which I am more than happy to rectify.

The air-conditioning units are in the lounge area only and unlike heat pumps have an inverter unit on the outside balcony. The power saver which works by the insertion of your room key card is not connected to the air-conditioning unit. Any slight noise may have been from the ceiling ducted ventilation system which can simply be disconnected by removal of the key card.

Apartment windows and sliders are fitted with a high grade laminated product to meet council requirements. As the building is less than a year old I would suspect this is a superior product.

Whilst we are just a few minutes from the main CBD area at 19 Anzac Ave, the nearest motorway is approximately a kilometre away. Guest comments regarding traffic noise are very unusual. However, we do have some apartments which face inwards and would allocate these to guests if we received a particular request for a quiet room.

I am very sorry that I did not receive advice to contact you. To enable me to resolve this issue I would welcome you to contact the hotel and ask to speak with the General Manager or you can email me directly on celestiongm@waldorf.co.nz

Kind Regards

Andrew Buenter

When we checked in early they said that was ok and we got upgraded to the penthouse on the top floor. It was a two bedroom apartment and was very clean and very comfortable. it had great views around and could see the port as well other parts of the city. The bed was one of the best of our holiday. We ate in the Indian restaurant on the ground floor which was also very good and reasonable priced. Both the staff of the restaurant and hotel were friendly and gave good service.

Thinking of this hotel as an apartment is actually very helpful. It's very nice with lots of space and modern facilities but it doesn't provide the typical hotel amenities that you may be used to. For example, there's no free internet, there are no little shampoo and lotion bottles, there is tea in the room but no coffee, there are plenty of towels but no washcloths (small towels). Most of the time I don't imagine that stuff matters too much because everyone I know tends to bring their own shampoo. Just be aware. It's a close walk to the ferries and lots of downtown bars and restaurants.

The Celestion Waldorf Apartments are a great accommodation for your stay in the Auckland area. We were able to check in early after a long flight without any problems. The apartments were very modern and well maintained. They are not located in the heart of big city chaos but everything that you could want is within manageable walking distance. Shopping, cafes, Viaduct Harbor, etc are all about a ten minute walk. To address a few of the complaints I have seen by other reviews - Yes for all of those out of shape people, there are hills but that is just the way the entire city area is, nothing to complain about. The landscape of the country is beautiful. The parking garage for the hotel is about a 5-7 minute walk from the hotel. They had no problem with us pulling on the side of the building to unload our bags and take them up to the room before we parked the car. As far as outside noise, I did not find it to be a problem. There was city traffic which is to be expected when you are staying in a downtown area. We live in Chicago and noise is a given. Also the Indian restaurant did not smell on the day that we were there. Overall this place is a great place to stay while in Auckland. Convenient location, great price, nice staff, cheap internet access and modern apartment. Worth it all of the way!

Nice rooms, great location, friendly staff. What more can I ask for. It was raining when I checked in, onsite parking was full. The reception staff was very helpful and found me another parking just a min walk from the hotel. He also let us park at the drive way next to the entry to unload.

When we get to the room, we were amazed by the size of the room. It was like the same size as my home.

They have a gym with swimming pool right opposite the building too.

We had a great stay. And looking at booking them again next month when we come back.
