One does not often visit Auckland, New Zealand in his life, but when he does, and has some aspirations to being a gourmet (of sorts), then he cannot miss the opportunity to also visit the supposedly most renowned restaurant in the city – SidArt.
What really stands out in the characterization of that place is its originality in how the food is served – at least on some days including the evening I was there. The waiter offered me a choice of five or ten courses, adding that the ten-course dinner will comprise all the kinds of food that were available to be served there on that day. Of course, I thought – what the heck, how many more times am I going to be here? – and went for the ten-course meal. Each course was reasonably small, only a little bigger than “amuse-bouche”, with kind of fruit granite or sorbet as an intermezzo between the 5th and 6th dish, but because there were ten of them, quantity-wise the meal was quite enough for me. There was one vegetarian snack but other than that, a lot of seafood and some meat – a lamb dish, a pork dish and a duck dish. For dessert, I opted for cheeses rather than chocolate ice-cream. The plating, the presentation, service and taste were impeccable.
As for value, well, all that pleasure comes with a price, and while I won’t quote any figures, this is not a gastronomical establishment for tourists on a shoestring budget, at least as I understand the expression. It was the second most expensive restaurant meal in my life…
The interior/décor is pleasant, in simply elegant European rather than North-American style, and as in any restaurant with the chef taking pride in his work, the activities going on in the kitchen are – in the modern fashion – partially visible to the guests. However, because the eating room is not particularly big and the tables are fairly close to one another, the noise, under the full-house conditions which was the case during my visit there, may be a few decibels above the level of comfort for some patrons.
