“A rather expensive but intense gastronomical pleasure”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 8, 2014

One does not often visit Auckland, New Zealand in his life, but when he does, and has some aspirations to being a gourmet (of sorts), then he cannot miss the opportunity to also visit the supposedly most renowned restaurant in the city – SidArt.
What really stands out in the characterization of that place is its originality in how the food is served – at least on some days including the evening I was there. The waiter offered me a choice of five or ten courses, adding that the ten-course dinner will comprise all the kinds of food that were available to be served there on that day. Of course, I thought – what the heck, how many more times am I going to be here? – and went for the ten-course meal. Each course was reasonably small, only a little bigger than “amuse-bouche”, with kind of fruit granite or sorbet as an intermezzo between the 5th and 6th dish, but because there were ten of them, quantity-wise the meal was quite enough for me. There was one vegetarian snack but other than that, a lot of seafood and some meat – a lamb dish, a pork dish and a duck dish. For dessert, I opted for cheeses rather than chocolate ice-cream. The plating, the presentation, service and taste were impeccable.
As for value, well, all that pleasure comes with a price, and while I won’t quote any figures, this is not a gastronomical establishment for tourists on a shoestring budget, at least as I understand the expression. It was the second most expensive restaurant meal in my life…
The interior/décor is pleasant, in simply elegant European rather than North-American style, and as in any restaurant with the chef taking pride in his work, the activities going on in the kitchen are – in the modern fashion – partially visible to the guests. However, because the eating room is not particularly big and the tables are fairly close to one another, the noise, under the full-house conditions which was the case during my visit there, may be a few decibels above the level of comfort for some patrons.

“Taste menu on Tuesdays”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 7, 2014

We went there to celebrate birthdays in the family, and we were amazed by the tasting menu. There were different dishes on every Tuesdays, classy and brilliantly crafted. Location was good with plenty of parking. Atmosphere in the restaurant was elegant and the lighting was romantic. Overall a worthwhile dining to recommend.

“Good to see, great to eat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed December 25, 2013

The eight course degustation of an experimental menu was a memorable experience. Each course was a delight to behold – the presentation was exquisite, the description by the wait staff clear and cogent. The flavours were incredible. For me personally, flavours matter as much as textures and it would be fair to say that some of the courses were a delightful medley of the sublest of flavours coupled with a variety of textures in a single morsel. It's a commendable achievement for the designer(s) of these dishes. I had a few comments though. As such things go, it's of course all subjective: I thought it would have been a good idea to break the monotony of three consecutive fish courses by breaking the sequence with a differently flavoured vegetarian dish. I also thought that the inclusion of an overly sweet component within a dish was a bit excessive – I did give my detailed feedback to staff, which was taken aboard in an accepting way. Also, I am a low salt eater and found some sauces to be a bit on the saltier side. But it might be different for other diners, like it was for the friend I dined with. Overall, a fabulous experience and certainly a memorable one. Would recommend and visit again.

“Small portions!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 14, 2013

Went there for the Friday 5 course lunch. Very interesting food, tasty and well presented. My biggest complaint is that after the 5 course meal I was sill hungry!

“Faaantastical”

Amazing, vaiety of ingredients , cooked in the breadth of cooking methods, from poaching to foams. Colours, then small ingredients which pop up unexpectedly in the mouth. Haute cuisine without the butter and cream . aaah
