“Good price but irritating”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014 via mobile

The rate we got on booking.com for a 2 bed apartment was good but the cons outweigh the pros.
The dryer didn't work in the apartment. We were told to pay for the one downstairs as they wouldn't repair it.
The fridge didn't work either which meant all out food went off. We told reception who said that there wasn't much they could do as they were fully booked and couldn't move us.
The website states that all rooms have air con but this only applies to superior rooms.
Waiting 15 minutes for an elevator because the staff were using both to visit every floor was annoying.
Getting into the carpark is a nightmare. You can see how many cars have crashed due to the black marks on the walls. The parking is $18 a day. The wifi works great but again you have to pay $10 a day. We didn't eat breakfast as we were too annoyed with paying extras.
The area is good which is the only positive.
All in all you get what you pay for if you just need a place to sleep.

4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2014

We had a room on 17th floor. Fantastic views. We had a two bedrooms, both of which were very clean and very comfortable. We had one room with twin beds, it was a little squashy and hard to get around of the end of the beds as room a bit squashy.
When we arrived we totally rearranged the furniture so that we could all sit comfortably in the lounge room, which is a lot smaller than the photos make it look. But we were quite comfortable as we didn't need to use the dining table (really a bench). The kitchen was a good size and well stocked. The bathroom was big, and had a washing machine, no dryer but there was a clothes rack.
The problems: firstly the DVD player didn't work, big issue when you have a 6 year old and you want to relax - there was also no Disney channel. We asked for service, they said someone would be right up, an hour later I rang again, and then someone came. They couldn't fix it. They went to get us another DVD player, a few minutes they said, after 30 minutes we went out as we had already wasted2 hours waiting for the DVD player. When we got back there was a player but no remote. Other than play there were no buttons on the player, and hence it was virtually useless. We rang three times for the remote it never came.
Secondly the heat - there is no air conditioning, this seems to be the norm in NZ though, we didn't get it anywhere. The room is stinking hot in summer, with the windows open it is bare able if there is a breeze. One day we had gale force winds so that wasn't particularly pleasant. The corridors are like a dry sauna as there are no windows there.
Thirdly the noise - ok this we got fixed so I want to share the solution, we spent the first night thinking the windows didn't seal and the wind was very strong and traffic noise and helicopter noise from nearby hospital. It was like sleeping on the street. We complained about the windows and then they explained about the little flap near the window handles. These must come over the window frame, if you do this it seals. I think a note about this in the room manual would help a lot of people, as with the windows sealed it is pretty quiet.
Lifts - you have to spend a lot of time waiting for elevators in this hotel.
Food - the breakfast is fine, the room is just a room, bit like a classroom. There is cereal and toast only, on the weekends pancakes. We got free breakfast so this might be why we didn't mind it.
Parking - unbelievably tight. We had a small car, we were lucky. You have to pay for parking.
Pool - small for size of hotel, but ok if you get it to yourself. If you are staying at this hotel for a pool though, this isn't the place for you.
Service - room was only serviced twice in 5 night stay, didn't get milk refill. But room was clean and tidy.
Would I recommend - even with all the above, yes, for a family looking for reasonably priced accommodation near centre of town. Just know it has issues.

Room Tip: If you have a lot of outside noise talk to reception about window seals.

We have stayed here 5 times before due to the cleanliness, family friendliness & central location of this great hotel. Our last visit being a few days ago.
I particularly wanted to thank Kit, Jeanette & his proffessional team for their empathy & great customer service when 4, of our family of 5, took ill and one was too sick to accompany us home. Nothing was to much trouble; the desk staff and kitchen ladies were fantastic. Our room was made available for an extra night at a generous price when Kit heard we had incurred huge unexpected airline cost for change of flight.
I was proud to be a NZer & experience this kindness to traveller's.
Rooms are light, clean, bright with plenty of windows and views. Great blackout blinds for additional sleep. All you need on hand, washer, iron, oven and hob, microwave, fridge/freezer.
Can't wait for a return visit with family and grandson to do justice to the excellant complimentary breakfast in the family friendly dinning area.
Thanks again team
best regards
Jane & Steve Meehan-Hughes

We have stayed here twice in January, as the rooms are very big and spacious for the location. As other reviewers have said, the parking is very tight and not easy to drive down to. The rooms are also almost unbearably hot, and even with the window open we struggled to keep cool. The corridors were even worse.

The staff were helpful, and the rooms nice and clean.

The only other comment we had is that we were not happy about the duvets only being wrapped in two sheets, and not having a proper duvet cover, so after turning over a few times during the night, you find the sheets have disappeared and you are covered in a duvet that has been used by countless others. I find this a little unhygienic.

Thank you for your review of St Martins Hollie J. Please be assured Hollie that all bedding is changed and cleaned on every full service and on the check out of guests. When you book to stay with us again our superior rooms all have air conditioning/heat pumps in them. Thank you for your positive comments on the staff and our room cleanliness and I have passed these on.

5 of us were attending an event in Auckland and booked a 2 bed apartment with sofa bed on Wotif. The rate was very good and the pictures made the apartment look very spacious. The location was very convenient. We arrived early and thankfully were allowed an early check in which was was gratefully received. The check in girl was helpful but omitted to tell us we had to swipe our room key to use the elevator so we spent several trips going up and down before we figured it out! This was after managing to get in the elevator, which was problem number 1. There is obviously no service elevator and so during the day it is constantly in use with the staff and cleaners and you have to wait ages to get the lift. One of the staff (looked like the manager!)had it full of laundry bags and there was no apology or explanation. The room was very small, quite dark and dingy and stuffy and with a very musty damp smell. the kitchen not particularly clean - stains on the oven. There is no servicing which is fine but we did have fresh towels on one of the 3 days - we ran out of toilet paper and milk so a daily top up would be helpful. The room had no air con and was very stuffy especially at night. The breakfast is in a funny room - which felt like some kind of hospital or institution room!! But the self service breakfast was adequate enough. All in all it was OK for our needs - good location and helpful staff but the room was very small and stuffy and not as we had been led to believe on the picture on the website.

Our reception staff are always willing to help with any questions, concerns or requests that you may have. Our standard rooms do not have air conditioning but our 23 superior rooms do have these.

We stayed at St Martins with our grandchildren and found the 2 bedroom apartment just what we wanted. The grandchildren loved the pool and the pancakes and now want one of their own! We stayed in a superior room which was great as it had a washing machine and air conditioning. Fantastic view from the 17th floor. We found the staff all very helpful and answered all of our questions and requests. Would recommend.
