“Go somewhere else!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2010

We booked this hostel online but when we turned up the owner wasn't there to give us our key. This is obviously a common occurrence as there is a phone outside reception which you use to contact him. Once we got him on the phone he said he'd be 15-20 minutes! We were only in Auckland for the weekend and on our way to the IMAX so weren't terribly impressed with being told to wait that long for him to show. Not only that but it turns out the double room we had booked and paid a deposit for wasn't available and he was going to have to move us up the road to one of his other properties. At this point I dearly wish we'd walked away. After all, I'd spent two days online deciding on a place to stay that matched our needs and had good reviews, the last thing I wanted to do was stay somewhere we knew nothing about.

Instead, we decided to be reasonable and look at the other place. It was a plain, 2 bed unit built onto their family home. I thought it looked ok so we agreed to stay there. Big mistake. After just a little while there I realised it was dated, filthy, it smelt weird and the bedroom was smaller than I'd realised. Also, the walls were so paper thin they might as well not have been there and our wheeler dealer host had booked not just us and another two people in the other room but also a couple with a toddler in a tent in the backyard! All using one tiny kitchen and bathroom.

The kitchen was poorly kitted out, the bathroom had black mould all over the ceiling and the bed cover had a huge watery stain the size of my hand - ugh.

To top it all off the female couple entertained two male guests until 3.30am and the couple in the garden came in with their noisy kid at 7am to use the bathroom and kitchen!

We demanded our deposit and second night payment back and fled as soon as we could. Luckily we discovered Oaklands Lodge backpackers in Mt Eden. I definitely recommend you go there instead.

Hi,

The Lantana Lodge in Auckland is very small.
When it is fully booked, you have to share one small kitchen, 3 showers &bathrooms with 25 others. The manager is busy doing other things, like selling his "own houses" rooms, just a few houses up the road. He's always away, taking care of his 4 other hotels/motels, in stead of his costumers.
All the doors slam when they close, the floor is noisy and the shared livingroom smells dirty and old.

It's more or less the cheapest option in Auckland, but it's really busy, small, noisy and the owner doesn't understand how to take care of people.

Rooms were tidy, so were the showers and living room, just to end with something positive.

Cheers

Jerry

we stayed here for 2 nights in march as it was cheap (around $62NZ or £13 per night) and quite last minute, but we were very impressed! we arrived quite early in the day and were not meant to check in until later but they were happy to give us our room early. the owners were really friendly and helpful. kitchen was brilliant there were so many free things to use like tea bags, sugar, butter, all the basics which was really handy. the people who stayed there at the same time as us were really friendly.
the location was good, it was about 2 mins from the main road through parnell which has buses to the city centre, very frequently and cheap. although you could easily walk to the city centre in under 15mins. there was a supermarket about 10mins away also which was open until late 7 days a week, very convenient.
really impressed would definately stay again. also there was free wireless internet as well as free computers to use.

This hostel is really welcoming. The managers are very friendly, and it is kept clean.
I stayed in a 7 beds dorm and it was ok. There is a cosy lounge room were you can easily meet people, and the kitchen is quite big.
They also have a free internet connexion and a small library.
It is in Parnell, a pretty suburb of Auckland, nearby the Auckland museum. In 20 mm you can walk to the city centre.
I would definitely recommand this place. I was travelling alone, and it was the perfect place for me to meet other travellers.

  • Liked — It was clean, quiet in the room, but there was a nice space to "socialise"

We stayed in a double room for three nights at the Lantana and for the money it was perfect. The rooms are a good size and really clean and comfortable. Facilities are perhaps a little tight for the number of guests if you are all trying to cook at the same time, but this also adds to the friendly atmosphere.
Nice location behind the main streets of Parnell (just down from the larger City Garden Lodge) making it feel more homely than many city hostels.

Recommend booking early, as all the hostels around this area were booked up and this was in the quiet shoulder season.

It only misses 5 stars due to the slightly tight space as mentioned above, and the fact that we were ask to pay a fee to hold our bags for the afternoon before our flight even though they were just propped up in the corridor.

  • Liked — Free internet, proximity, clean good size rooms, friendly manager
  • Disliked — Toaster did not work, no shoes to be worn inside which can be a little grubby on the feet sometimes!
