We got a Grabone voucher for a 3 course vegan meal and a glass of wine. I got it based on some really good reviews so had high hopes.
The first disappointing thing about this restaurant is the location/atmosphere. It's in the middle of an indoor type courtyard where all of the hotel rooms look over. It's not particularly welcoming.
For starter we had the signature macadamia cheese and olive oil poached vegetables. It looked picture perfect. Unfortunately the flavours just didn't stand up to the asthetics of the dish. There wasn't enough flavour and it resulted in a rather meak dish.
We choose different mains. The slow cooked onion and mushroom tart was quite simply the worst thing that I've ever eaten in a restaurant. And that is saying something as I've been in some pretty dodgy restaurants. The mushrooms were really overpowering and the short crust pastry was like cardboard. Someone told me that they don't do shortcrust pastry in NZ and I know why now. The other main was grilled artichoke and kumara with a onion sauce. The articoke was nice but it was a very bland and dry meal. It was like a veggie meal that would be served in a restaurant that predominantly serves meat. Very poor effort.
For dessert we had a coconut sago pudding with chocolate icecream. The coconut sago pudding was nice but what on earth was the chocolate icecream doing on the plate. It was so rich that you couldn't taste anything else on the plate.
The other issue is that they served up the food at a million miles an hour. From the moment we sat down to the moment that we left was 35 minutes. That is really poor service. We had barely finished cerrtain dishes before the next came so to be honest it was definitely the chefs fault rather than the waiting staff.
