“Absolute wilderness .... don't ask the kids”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed November 26, 2013

We spent a day doing some local walks from the Lake Waikaremoana Caravan Park over to the visitor centre and to the nearby waterfalls. Area is very beautiful, these walks were easy, but having younger children who decided they weren't really interested hindered us a little. Road in from Wairoa is manageable, road out to Rotorua is very windy, isolated and takes time to travel. Saw a deer on the side of the road on the way out which made the journey more memorable. Will come back when the kids are bigger and walk around the Lake.

“"a time away from the busy world"”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 15, 2013

No mobile phone coverage, no TV, no radio - what a great place to retreat the pressures of life. I did the Great Walk in 4 days with my friend. We paid a bit extra for the pleasure of having our larger packs transported by the water taxi from hut to hut, leaving us free to walk in comfort with just our day packs. I can highly recommend taking this option - no aching shoulders, ankles, knees or backs. This walk is very special, the huts cosy and friendly, but do take earplugs as the snoring from the fellow hikers can be a sleep hindrance.
Fantastic experience.

“Beautiful”

A quick day trip to Panekire. Steep clib up to the bluff but the full view of the lake has proven to be well worth the puff.
Don't miss the lovely Lake Kiriopukae for the unique rock formation and plants on your way back.

“Beautiful”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 3, 2013

We did a three day walk, started at panekire hut first night. The walk has a lot of steep, almost climbing parts in the beginning (or end), but the views are just amazing. The huts are well equipped and not cold at all, provided with a fireplace.

“Lake Waikaremoana Great Walk”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 2, 2013

This is a great Tramp, but beware, the climb up to Panekire Ridge is steep! If you're going to do this tramp I highly recommend doing it in a clockwise direction - that way you get to enjoy the stunning views from the ridge as you ascend it. If you go the other way, the views of the lake are completely obstructed by trees, and behind you. The tramp can be done easily in 3 days. Take 4 if you really want to savour the moments, but if you take 2 I think you're rushing it. The side trip to Korokoro falls is worth it too. The track times are dependent on your level of fitness - but in general the times marked on the shelters on the track are quite generous, so don't panic too much if you think you won't make your camp/hut.
