I found the place on a booking site where the rate was 65 dollars per night. Because it was not clear to me if we could check in in the middle of the night, (it is not possible, though they later claimed to have night staff), I made my booking directly by e-mail for one day later.
However, upon arrival in the afternoon, no one was there to check us in. Management later claimed staff was on lunch break. So we tried to call, but no one answered the phone at the number listed for the hotel. We left our luggage, went in to town and came
back after dinner. This time, someone was at reception, but she could not find our reservation.
When she finally found (or just decided to check us in anyway), we had to pay 80 dollars per night, instead of the advertised rate. In cash. Apparently, in the evenings, credit card transactions are not possible, or allowed. What madness is this? Does their phone or Internet connection close down at night? Do they find it safer to accept cash at night? I have never experienced silliness like this on the five continents I have travelled on.
In the room: the bathroom was smelly, the shower head leaking, the smoke detector dangling from the ceiling, the ventilation duct clogged with dust (fire hazard!)
Outside were full ashtrays, that never got emptied. Toilets not very clean either.
One night, noise from other guests outside on the patio, where it is supposed to be quiet after ten o'clock kept us up until 2 a.m. Management later claimed we should have contacted night staff. I think night staff should pro-actively monitor the premisses to avoid these issues from arising in the the first place. I doubt however if there really is night staff; if there is, why is it not possible to check in at 2 a.m.? In conclusion: I know Perth is expensive, but it's better to bite the bullet and shell out some more dollars than to economise and stay here.

We arrived and nobody was on reception, when the manager did turn up he was extremely rude and unhelpful. I requested to be charged in AUD but he charged me in GBP because "that's the way we do it here", he just wanted to make money by giving me an awful exchange rate. The rooms were filthy, the linen smelt awful. I had a used cottonbud in my bed! The bathrooms just plain disgusting, so dirty, clumps of black hair, used razor on floor, dirt and grime. Was supposed to stay 2 nights, I checked into another hotel and didn't stay there at all, but was refused refund. I will be uploading photos shortly which prove how disgusting the place is, and I will be reporting the place to environmental health.

Room Tip: Don't go

We stayed 3 nights at Hay Street Backpackers in Perth. Our first impression was a very unfriendly guy at the reception. We stayed in a double room next to the pool. The provided linen was dirty, the whole room quite messy. The enclosed shower did not really work. The shared toilet was simply disgusting, even after asking at the reception for cleaning it.

Really quiet hostel, it almost seemed that we were the only ones there. The room was clean and the swimming pool was good. Location not the greatest. Liqour store were near, so that's a plus. When came back to the hostel in the evening, the gate was closed, so we needed to climb over it.. Nice. Kitchen utensils were old and there were only a few of them. Good place if you want some privacy and quietness.

Hay Street Backpackers is a good place to stay. The location is great and the staff is friendly. Our room in the back was quiet. Our room was clean, the kitchen area was pretty clean, lots of people cooking so it wasn't spotless, but it wasn't bad. Free WiFi was a plus.
