Let's face it, if you've come to Perth for tourism, you've either made a mistake with your booking or your travel agent lied to you. It's tidy, dull, full of normal people doing normal things, and is completely devoid of spirit or culture.
The Swan Bells echoes this aridity of the soul. Empty of anything identifiably Australian, the tower contains mostly bells from Europe, reminding us how deeply colonial this part of the world still is. Terra nullius seems to be alive and well in this anodyne post-modern structure, plonked without the least shred of cultural awareness onto the banks of the river.
But if you're a white middle-class European or American, this may ring your bells.
It didn't ring mine.
