“Clean basic hotel”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 23, 2012

I needed a hotel near to all the car rental companies and decided to pick Ambassador Hotel for it's near location. To be fair, hotel prices in Perth is way expensive and not quite up to the standard of most cities but again Perth city is not known (to me at least), to be a tourist city. Let's list the pros and cons...

Pros
Polite staff
Free WIFI!!! Very important for business travellers, in fact most travellers
Got upgraded into a bigger room
Clean
Comfortable enough
Not noisy
You can easily find food just a few walk away or at Hay Street right behind the hotel. No problems.

Cons
Very old and dated design
15 to 20 minute walk to the shopping district
area around hotel can be quiet
Check in time is 2pm. I been to many cities never met one that is so late but was told it's totally normal in Australia. (shrugs)

No heating in the room I was in.
No in house movies or movie channels ...It was stated in the accommodation brochure 2011/2012 that these were available .
The channels were listed In the in /house information volder was also incorrect
I went there for r and r after an illness.
I spent a cold and miserable few days in this Hotel.
Yes the Hotel is old but the thing that annoyed me was the was the misleading advertising .
I would not have booked there if the information had been correct .

This hotel is really dated. Looks like the rooms haven't had a makeover since the 70's. I was in room on the second floor at the front of the hotel. The room was clean enough but seriously drab. The decor was a very dull beige and brown and the carpet looked positively ancient. The room was really noisy (street noise) and the bed was saggy. The plastic basin in the bathroom was seriously marked with all semblance of colour and surface scratched off and there was a cigarette burn on the edge. Shows how long since anything was replaced. For $200 a night, it was not good value for money. However the staff were friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Choose a room that doesn't face onto Adelaide Terrace

I was booked in here by my company as they said they couldn't find any place else. Smelly, tired, worn, depressing. Pillows like rocks. One of those places where the electricity won't come on unless the key is in the holder - so no charging your computer, phone, nook, batteries etc, while you are out. Of course there was only one electric outlet and if you wanted to plug into the intenet, your computer cord can't reach the electric outlet. Furniture mis-matched and uncomfortable. Shampoo, soap etc. is bolted to the wall and of very low quality, I couldn't even get a decent hand wash.
What was good? Staff was friendly, the internet is included - but it's cable not wi-fi and you have to ask for the cable, it is very close to the office. Try somewhere else.

The room was very basic and clean. The whole place is outdated. Nothing special. Staff were friendly though.

Travelled to Perth for a one day meeting. First thing i'd forgotten is how outrageous Perth is for hotel prices... Its nuts. And to be honest when i put my mind to it - there really is no fantastic hotel in perth - they are all looking old and tired... and they charge and arm and a leg. And whats worse the WA government has no plans to try and build more hotels. But back to the review of the hotel.

The Ambassador is an old 70's style hotel. The fascade looks old, tired and dated. However, to their credit the rooms are not bad. They have been recently renovated (at least the room i was in had), and the bathrooms were adequate. I object to the price i paid, but apart from that, the room was functional and i had a good nights sleep.

The staff when we checked in were a little cold (but then again it was 1am in the morning), but check out the next morning was great - the lady was extremely helpful to myself and my colleagues.

Would i stay here again - probably not - but then again, if i had a choice i wouldnt overnight in perth full stop - too expensive and the place is like a ghost town at night... It really is a provincial city... albeit a very pretty one.

I had to change my reservations several times. Xavier Sala, who manages both the Good Earth Hotel and the Perth Ambassador Hotel, was very patient and accommodating. We had reservations with both hotels at different times. They are well located. We got a reasonable price for Perth, which is a very expensive city! It included a substantial breakfast. The only area that noticably needed updating was the "bar", where we had a drink after finally arriving in Perth from LA. We were able to leave our luggage after we checked out, walk down to the river, walk up to the free city bus that took us on a lovely tour. After two months in Australia and NZ, I really must remark on the general friendliness and hospitality we met with everywhere, and really good, free transportation in many places, as well as free admission to gardens, museums, etc in many cases! Perth was a great starting place for our adventure. And thank you especially, Xavier, for working with me as things kept changing!
