Owner description: Located in the spectacular Shoalwater Islands Marine Park, just 45 minutes south of Perth is Penguin Island- a beautiful, unspoilt nature reserve home to WA's largest colony of little penguin as well as dolphins, sea lions, stingrays, pelicans, ospreys and more. Visitors can see the penguins being fed by rangers at the Discovery Centre. It's also fantastic for swimming, snorkelling, having a picnic or just enjoying some of the best coastal scenery in Perth. Rockingham Wild Encounters operate an hourly ferry service to Penguin Island (it's only a 5 minute ride), glass bottom boat cruises of Shoalwater Bay and adventure style cruises to watch the local dolphins and explore more of the marine park. “Such Cuties!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 17, 2012

My husband and I kayaked over here for a little visit. These little guys are just the cutest things. They have a little show where you can see them swim the walk around. I would advise you not to walk over if the tide is going in and out. We have seen many people get trapped and up to their necks in water trying to back. Great way to ruin cell phones and other stuff. Make sure you pay attention or get the little boat back.

Thanks very much for the great review. Kayaking is an awesome way to enjoy Penguin Island and glad you enjoyed the penguin feeding. Also appreciate your advice on staying safe and catching the ferry rather than trying to walk the sandbar. We had some 'near misses' this weekend with the hot weather and high tides. Thanks again for the review and we hope you visit again soon.

“fantastic day out”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 15, 2012

Our family went across to the island on the ferry when travelling back from up North. We had a really good day and really enjoyed the penguin display. It was informative and entertaining. The walk around the island was great and very easy to do even in the heat. We saw lots of lizards and birds but no penguins.
The beach was lovely, very clean with clear water. Next time we visit we'll take the kayaks and spend more time over on the island.
Also we'll do one of the trips, either glass bottomed boat or a tour.
We found it affordable and worth the money. Definatley a place to take the relatives when they are visiting

Thanks for the great review- sounds like you had a great day. If you come back with the kayaks make sure you paddle over to Seal Island as well (about 600 metres north of Penguin Island). The Sea Lions love kayakers and will often come into the water and swim playfully amongst your kayaks- one of the best wildlife experiences you will have. Most kayakers paddle to Seal Island first and then across to Penguin Island. Just remember you can't land on Seal island (or any other rocks or islands in the Shoalwater Island Marine Park except Penguin Island)- you have to stay at least 5 minutes from the shoreline.

Also re the penguins- they are hard to find during the day as most daylight hours are spent at sea hunting and most will return about 1 hour after sunset when the island is closed to the general public. Some do stay behind on the island on any given day but will tend to stay well hidden as they are naturally very shy birds so finding them is a bit of a treasure hunt. Once you get to know the island better, you will learn their favourite hang outs and most days will be able to spot a couple in the wild. The best time to see them in the wild is mid December through February when they stay ashore for 6- 8 weeks for their annual moult. You will see them hiding under the board walks close to the beaches and on the hot days some will even stand in the shallows to cool off. They do look a bit strange this time of year though as they are losing their feathers but it's a natural process that happens every year.
Thanks again for the review and hope you visit again soon.

“mixed experience”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed October 11, 2012

I had and absolute blast in the Dolphin watch cruise and would recommend it to anyone. The boat was great, the guides were great, the dolphins were amazing & the sea lions were lazy. 5 stars for the tour. However the island itself was a let down. We missed the penguin feeding by 2 minutes and were advised that they would do an extra session in 20 minutes. when I went back they had changed their mind so we missed out. very disappointed. The island itself is small and covered in bird poo. It took us about 20 minutes to walk around the island which is sweet enough, make sure you go on a hot day and take your togs because it is an hour between ferrys and you will need something to do.

Hi Sharon. Appreciate the feedback, especially the great review of our Dolphin Watch Adventure Cruise. Really sorry to hear that you missed out on the penguin feed. The rangers are normally very accommodating when it comes to putting on extra feeds on busy days or if our boats are running a little bit late. I will contact them to discuss why they decided not to put on the extra show. FYI and for other readers, the Discovery Centre is open from 10am- 3.30pm daily so you can always get in to see the penguins outside of the feeding times at 10.30am, 12.30pm & 2.30pm. We would like to get you back out to the island so that you guys can experience it, if you're interested please email me at aaron@dolphins.com.au and I will organize some ferry tickets for you. Thanks again for the review and hope to hear from you.

“Adorable!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 10, 2012

The little penguins here are so adorable! Everyone, from our three-year-old to ninety-three-year-old great grandpa had a great time at Penguin Island. Take a picnic lunch along and watch the wildlife while you eat. Just keep an eye on the lizards that will come looking for crumbs! After the great demonstration with the penguins, you can easily spend an hour or two walking around the island to take in the gorgeous ocean views and penguins. And don't miss out on the boat trip to see the sea lions and pelicans. It was truly an unforgettable experience. Keep in mind that they are closed for the winter and open again in mid-September. Don't forget your camera!

“8 dolphins and 6 seal lions cavorting in the waves”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed October 1, 2012

We took the ferry to Penguin Island and then the glass bottom boat trip to see the seal island. It was a perfect sunny day and we saw 8 dolphins being played with by seals as well as the spectacular bay and islands. The Captain of the boat was funny and informative and every one we met was friendly.

Later we walked around the Penguin Island and saw 1 wild penguin in a cave and about 10 rescued penguins being fed. The day was absolutely perfect and well worth the money. No food available so bring a picnic to eat on the beach.

Hi Laura. Last Sunday was pretty magic at the island! I was skippering our Dolphin Watch boat next to the glass bottom boat that day when the dolphins were playing with the sea lions- always amazed at how they love to hang out together!

Appreciate the great review and glad you enjoyed your visit. I will pass on your kind comments to Francis who was your skipper on the day.

Enjoy the rest of your holiday : )
