Being on a vacation in Perth with my 2 kids and 3 male friends, I was a bit apprehensive about suggesting a day at the zoo, considering the boys might prefer a cool beer somewhere....

Not only did my apprehension and worries vanish - the day turned out to be what we can only describe as a fantastic experience that changed the image of the word Zoo in our minds forever...
I had been to the Perth Zoo many years ago, but this was before all the many positive changes, the creation of the savannah area, the wetlands, the Australian bushwalk.... Imagine yourself walking through African bushland, no fences to be seen and around the corner, a glass screen and you are facing a hyena. Unreal ! All the animals are close by, yet safely behind glass screens....

But not only the biggies(rhino, elephants etc) evoked screams of delight
from my children - the monkey areas, the bird houses (How many varieties are there in Australia ?), the nocturnal house (huhu, a bit scary, especially with a bity bat flying at you ), the wetlands etc.all these left them in awe of the variety of creation. The guys had a wonderful time , too, walking through jungle-like areas (bit of that adventurer spirit) and taking roll upon roll of film. There are many more things to explore, but a word on the Australian bushwalk area, especially for people from overseas (like us): If you walk the very well designed trail, you will not only meet up with many of the indiginous animals roaming around freely (!) ,but you will start to appreciate the diversity and uniqueness of the Australian fauna and flora and actually save yourself a trip into the real bush. especially if you are on a tight budget or time schedule.

Have fun and explore the rest for yourself, but leave yourself enough time, it is truly a whole day, whole family treat. Perth Zoo is a must for your visit to Perth !
