If you are into the arts, the Gallery is certainly a place to visit, always changing and the artwork is widely varied. Also available nearly is an excellent coffee shop. The museum is also within close walking distance

“Poorly administered gallery with a lot of potential”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed November 25, 2013

A week ago, I'd have given the Art Gallery of Western Australia a five star review on the basis of its current collection: a series of pieces by Salvador Dali and Vincent van Gogh. These were items that rarely travel and were borrowed from the Museum of Modern Art in New York. It was a good collection. The on-site cafe consistently under-delivers, but I don't judge a gallery based upon that.

But my review changes now. I was mortified to read this afternoon that the Art Gallery of Western Australia has ended its collaboration with MOMA early. This is a real shame and a sign of poor leadership by the Art Gallery. This is a gallery whose extravagant budget never delivers too much, apart from this MOMA collection. They have another $700 million+ in secured funds for a re-development - and have had this for well over a year now - but they're still at the extremely early stages of this. God only knows how it can take so long to came up with some concepts. We're not talking about a multi-billion dollar upgrade here, it's something on a much smaller scale.

It's increasingly clear that this is a Gallery with poor leadership and no direction. For this reason, I am now actively campaigning for the State government to significantly cut their budget. I will be in contact with all of Western Australia's elected members in the next week because I am not going to allow for the gross incompetence of the Art Gallery of Western Australia's administration to continue for any longer. It's such a shame. This is a gallery with potential and money -- but there is no one at the helm to accomplish anything.

“An Interesting and Eclectic Collection”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 7, 2013

Whilst not the biggest gallery in Australia we spent a couple of hours here enjoying the various items split by a refuelling break at the welcoming gallery cafe. We particularly enjoyed the four "Our Collection" sections on the ground floor. A number of the artists in the earlier period were known to us but the highlights were the final two sections which include many vibrant items from Australian national artists. It was good also to feel the buzz of this well used gallery in it's attractive setting.

“Small but interesting”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed November 5, 2013

I happened to be in Perth for a particularly interesting exhibition at this gallery, but its permanent collection is well worth seeing on its own. Especially for a visitor from Europe who might not have seen much Australian art elsewhere. Nice design and spacious feeling. Good shop and cafe.
