“45 minutes wait without a menu”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

We arrived at the restaurant, having booked a table for 2 and there was only three other tables with guests seated, however we had to ring the bell to get service and be seated at out table.
We were taken around a corner and down a narrow section of the restaurant (even though the whole restaurant was empty).
After waiting about 15-20 minutes we were given a winelist and left to ponder our options, 20 minutes later we were offered to order our drinks, which did come promptly.
After 45 minutes we were given menus and having sat for almost an hour we finally ordered our food. Still only around 5 small tables of seated guests within the whole restaurant.
We finally ordered and after 1.5 hours we received our main meal, which was wrong, but as we couldn't find a waitress to explain the issue, decided to share the other meal we had ordered.
After 2.5 hours a waitress came to clear our table and asked about the untouched meal, we explained the issue and she said that 'the chef must have made a mistake', but offered no solution or apology. When asked for the bill she proceeded to charge us for the untouched mistake and walk away.
Finally giving up we walked to the front counter with the bill and paid, then left. We will not be returning. The food itself is fine, nothing special, but would have been better if the service wasn't so terrible!
Overall took over 3 hours to get a drink, an entree and an incorrect main meal.

“Good but not exceptional”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed December 2, 2012

When we arrived for Sunday dim sum the friendly manager showed us to our table and checked back on us a couple of times during the meal. We had the pan fried pork and prawn dumplings and steamed Shanghai dumplings (both 3 for $6.80), steamed prawn balls covered with sticky rice (3 for $7.80), and the Beijing duck pancakes (2 for $12.80). All were good, and we expected to pay a little more here due to its Federation Square location and elegant furnishings. But we left thInking that we enjoy the Chinese food we get at our neighborhood restaurants more than what we just had, for less money, and BYO. The restaurant has an outdoor seating area overlooking Fed Square, but it was a bit too cool to sit there; the only two people out there were smokers. All the servers were very friendly and efficient. The only slight hiccup was not being served the last of our four dishes. Our server asked if we'd like something else and was surprised we had not received our final dish. We were in no hurry so no problem. We had a nice Tahbilk Marsanne for $34, quite a surprisingly low price markup. We're glad we came here but probably won't return. There are so many good Chinese restaurants in the CBD that there's no need to pay a premium like at Bokchoy Tang.

“Great contemporary chinese”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed October 2, 2012

The duck pancakes and sweet and sour pork ribs were to die for while the deep fried ice cream finished off the meal. Not the cheapest but the food and atmosphere is great.

“Pot-stickers a little too ... sticky”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed August 11, 2012

Lunched here on a sunny winter's day with a friend, and enjoyed the decor and glimpses into Federation Square. We ordered a selection from the yum cha menu. The dumpling fillings were all tasty and enjoyable, but the dumplings themselves spoiled somewhat by the stickiness of the skins, which made it impossible to lift them from their steamers intact. This was worst in the xiao long bao dumplings, renowned for their silky, soupy fillings. The fillings were entirely lost because we simply couldn't lift the dumplings from the paper on which they rested - so this rather defeated the purpose. We had wine by the glass, choosing from a smallish selection which was not particularly well-priced. Service was friendly and efficient. The location of Bokchoy Tang is lovely, but Melbourne has far better yum cha options to choose from.
