“not an executive Apartment”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed July 15, 2013

We booked an 1 BR Executive Apartment at the Quest SXY in South Yarra for 6 nights in
July 2013.
The room we got (Mezzanine 1) even with best intentions, I could not call a 4 star Executive Apartment!
It would have been at very best a standard Apartment!

The Apartment was clean and tidy but stuffy. Even running the noisy aircon did not provide fresh air. There is no way to air the bedroom.
The Apartment gave me the impression to live in box in a carpark. The outlook from the only window was very ordinary, into offices across the road.
At night the flood lights from the nearby tennis court illuminated the whole apartment.
This apartment was noisy from neighbours above and next door.

But worst of all was the noise from the lift. Every time the lift door opened and closed it felt like a roar from a train at the nearby railway line. Extremly disruptive and disturbing!
Sorry, to say, but this Apartment is below average.
If I book and pay for an executive Apartment I don’t expect a standard Apartment.

Room Tip: Do not accept Mezzanine floor for more than 1 night.

Our family of 4 spent a long weekend at Quest SXY in South Yarra. Don't get it confused with Quest South Yarra. The 2 properties almost back onto each other, but have different owners & this is a smaller, more boutique property.

We had a particularly large 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment. Despite other reviewers comments our apartment was whisper quiet with no train noise. The decor was tasteful & the space looked almost brand new.

Overall it felt like a new large apartment, not a hotel. There was a large entrance hall and the bedrooms were well separated. The kitchen was fully equipped, and the bathrooms spacious. The heating worked well in cold Melbourne, but I note the second bedroom did not have airconditioning for summer.

Just across the road is a fabulous cafe, '2 Birds 1Stone'. It's young and funky with good food & great coffee. (Even the decaf was good.)

This is an excellent location for convenient walking access to some very good nearby restaurants, coffee and the S. Yarra train station. The 1 bedroom configuration was small and lacking workspace but did have a modest galley kitchen that is appropriate for simple cooking or reheating leftovers. Our booking package included both Internet service (which is a decent speed for what I've experienced elsewhere in Australia) and underground parking. The staff was very pleasant and helpful with our requests.

The only problem appears to be a temporary one, with two (possibly three) large scale construction projects immediately adjacent to the Quest building. Privacy and noise were an issue, as construction begins daily before 7:00 AM every day (workers can be heard by 6:30) and was immediately outside of our balcony... as if we shared breakfast with the crew each day. When the construction boom ends in Melbourne, I expect that this will be a much nicer place to stay, until which time I still recommend the property but suggest a high floor.

We loved the place, it was very cosy and modern. Equipped with everything you need and very clean. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Location is great also, being very close to the city and train stop South Yarra. It's a bit pricey but worth it, I would stay there again.

Well located serviced apartments. But door handles and toilet fittings on the brink.
Do not vacate before getting a thorough check of the property by staff and getting your pre authorisation of credit card cancelled. We were charged $300 for a broken picture frame, a day after vacating. Total fraudulent accusation !!

4 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2013

My family and I stayed one night at the Quest SXY in South Yarra in May 2013, in a 1br Apartment (with roll-away for my son).
The location of the apartments is very handy to Toorak Rd and Chapel St in South Yarra. There is self-parking available on site for an extra charge per night.
I had originally booked via a deal on wotif, and unfortunately had to change the booking, but this was accommodated with the advertised admin fee which basically means we paid about the standard rate in the end for our nights stay.
Check in was quick an efficient process, and the request for a rollaway was organised.
The 1br apartment was new and furnished in the "quest" style, and it had a kitchenette. The bedroom was quite small in the apartment we had - if we had a child in a portacot we would have been flat out fitting them in the room, but it also had a wall of cupboards which would be great for storage if you were a single person or couple on an extended stay.
The apartment we were allocated had access to a large outdoor patio area.
There was a washer and dryer in the bathroom. The bathroom had a glass framed shower (no bath) but I always prefer the stand up showers and not the ones that are over a bath so this was good. Unfortunately the shower pressure was dreadful but that is a problem with many hotels these days due to the water saving shower-heads.
The SXY building backs onto the South Yarra train station so there are train lines directly at the back of the hotel. If outside noise disturbs you, get an apartment that looks onto Claremont street instead, as I could hear the trains (the window of the bedroom faced west in the direction of the station) - however I still had a good nights sleep, so it wasn't exceptionally noisy.
I used the gym - it is a basic set-up there were two treadmills, an eliptical, a stationary bike and some handweights as well as a weights machine. The room has air con and a TV. The good thing about the gym is that there is a sliding door that opens up onto a balcony, so you can use the equipment and have the room open so it doesn't seem so stuffy. The only downside is there are no towels available near the gym for use. I didn't get to use the pool, but looked out at the area through the windows from the walkway to the gym. The pool is very small, but the outside area looked nice.
It is an easy walk up onto Toorak Road and there is a 7-11 nearby (just past the station) and a small supermarket a bit further along. Lots of restaurants as well.
The SXY is a good place to stay if you want to be in the South Yarra area, especially if you can get a sale rate via wotif or the like.
The Hotel is very close to tram and train services, so it would be a good spot to base yourself if you wanted to see more of Melbourne as well.

Room Tip: Rooms with windows facing west get some noise from the train station.

Hi LeeL96, thank you for taking the time to write such a thorough review of our property. It's great to see that overall you had a good experience staying with us at Quest SXY South Yarra. It's a shame that you experienced admin fees as you booked via wotif, this is something we do not charge when booking directly with us. It's great to see that you noticed the abundance of restaurants in our area as well as our close proximity to public transport and supermarkets. We look forward to welcoming you back to our property should you have any future requirements in our area.

Although at a very convenient address some rooms get no sunlight at all, this coupled with the heater not working led to a less than comfortable stay, particularly as we have an 18 month old. The in room menus are completely out of date and despite informing the front desk, nothing had been done about this after a three week stay. Complacent.
