“A special restraunt”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed January 26, 2013

I have been to Gingerboy 5 or 6 times and it is one of my favourite restraunts anywhere. It is funky style in a narrow three storey building. The preferred approach is sharing a number of smaller and mid sized dishes. We all tried the son in law egg which is consumed whole and explodes in your mouth, very different. Overall Gingerboy is small in space, reasonably expensive but big in innovatation and produces tasty dishes..

“love this funky bar style restaurant”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 25, 2013

This little treasure really impressed! Cool and sexy decor, very accommodating staff, we were in a hurry and asked to be in and out quickly and our needs were met. Great food presentation and so very very yummy. Price is not cheap but reasonable for the quality, taste and decor. It was very noisy and cramped so hard to converse. Despite this we loved the place and the food. We can not wait to go back and sample a few more dishes when we have more time on our hands. We had the cuttlefish and the crisp fried baby snapper and were talking about the taste of the food all night long. Yum, yum, yum!

“Great food but let down by service”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed January 22, 2013

A group of 5 of us dined at Gingerboy for the 8.30 sitting. We arrived at 8:25 and unfortunately had to wait until close to 9pm before our table was ready. The entrance area can get very busy and it was quite awkward for all of us to wait there. We were initially given a drinks menu to have a drink before heading in but by the time they actually took our order we were ready to head in. Once finally in the restaurant we found the environment great. I like the open kitchen style more but for a fairly small space it has a nice atmosphere.
We decided to pick a selection of dishes from each section and found the majority really tasty and very interesting. Favs were the pot sticker dumplings, the cuttlefish and the Red Duck Curry. The service however really let it all down. It wasn't rude or anything like that just very slow and there was way too many mix up's. We almost missed out on one of our starter plates until we reminded the waiter of this and ended up have 2 main dishes brought to our table that weren't for us. It was only us questioning this that made them realise and take the dish away to the correct table. I'm sure they were likely just having an off night but I'd rather head to one of the other similar places which I think offer much more.

“Trendy, Tasty and Terrific”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 18, 2013

We visited Gingerboy after having it recommended to us by a friend. Down a little alley in the heart of the city, you feel like you are about to discover some well-kept secret rendezvous, and your not really wrong.
Gingerboy is an eclectic mix of asian and contemporary cuisines that have been put together with true expertise. The building itself is a narrow two storeys with sexy bars, and modern furniture. The crowd is your typical 'Melbourne-cool', and there is a style about this place that you don't find in your usual restaurant.
Being vegan, we were delighted to know that Gingerboy could cater for us and they did a brilliant job. We ordered from the specific vegetarian menu and the waiting staff knew exactly what was vegan, or could be made vegan. We proceeded to order as much as we could and everything was fresh and tasty. The textures of the food were as interesting as the presentation and the flavours—the chefs know what they are doing here. This is really high quality food and the skills from the kitchen are more than apparent.
Make sure you book a table for busy weekends, and don't be surprised by the crowd—it's busy because it's good. While it's a poorly-kept secret, Gingerboy is a fabulous find and worth the walk down a dark alley way to get there.

“Tasty Asian style hawker and shared plate in stylish ambience”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed January 11, 2013

The food at Gingerboy continues to impress! It has been awhile since I last ate there but am glad I came back. The hawker style asian and shared plates are yummy with delicate flavours and texture without being pretentious. The setting is delightful, stylish without being pretentious. The wine list is okay, I would have like to a broader wine list that would match asian style cuisine, predominantly the whites and sparkling/champagne. The service was professional though a tad hurried. Like many "tapas style" or asian shared / grazing plates restaurants/bistro in Australia, Gingboy makes Melbourne an Australian mecca for easy going, stylish and delicious food at reasonable prices.
