“Ok for a budget stay”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed July 11, 2013

Stayed here with my father for a business trip. The rooms are very basic but the bed was comfy and the sheets clean. There was no tea/coffee facilities in the room, only downstairs in the dining area. Felt a bit like a hostel with the shared dining area. The room featured a very small toilet and shower in the room. Staff were nice. I would possibly stay here again if I needed a very basic cheap place to stay.

I have stayed in many hotels under the Accor group previously, but this is my first stay in Ibis Budget after the recent rebranding of Ibis.

To judge this hotel, one has to really remember that it is a budget hotel. No frills. Nothing beyond what is necessary. This serves its purpose of providing a shelter and comfortable bed for sleep, and a functioning bathroom for personal care.

The bed is clean and comfortable, but it is nothing that you would expect to see in a hotel (think Ikea bunk beds). Towels and sheets are well-used and not luxurious. There seems to be a lingering smell in the room. The toilet is tiny and a little claustrophobic even. The shower cubicle is adequate in size but the hot water supply can be a little shoddy. It has a shower curtain in place of the door because the room has no space for a bathroom door. Tiny window provides a direct view into the offices opposite. Considering that it is meant for 3 or 4 people, the price is actually very reasonable for Melbourne CBD.

Check-in and check-out was fast.

That being said, the location is superb. Its location near the corner of Elizabeth Street and Collins Street simply means that most of Melbourne is within reach.

I stayed in room 710 as part of a group occupying several rooms on the floor. My room was a standard corner room. The rooms are very basic, one double bed with a bunk over the top, a desk in the corner (with the only power point above it) a TV, tiny screen shower area and toilet. The room was a corner one so I had two windows with a nice view down Elizabeth Street.
In the time I stayed the room was completely remade on one day, and the second day I got some new towels, but the bed wasn't made, and one of my towels was missed.
The bed was comfortable and once the AC was going the room was warm.
The lifts in the hotel seemed to work spasmodically and have a mind of their own.

We received complimentary breakfast for the 3 days, but at $9 for toast or cereal I reckon you could do better to go somewhere else (QV Markets had full plate breakfasts for $10!).

The foyer and entrance is very shabby and crowded and feels very much like a boarding house.

My pet gripe about the room is the layout. There is a tiny wet area with shower and sink. It has a curtain to pull around it, but I'm unsure how any person could get dry behind the curtain.
Secondly the only mirror is located here, which is miles from the nearest power point. For the 3 nights of my stay I had to make do with blow drying by the mirror of my makeup compact :( If I stayed again I would bring an extension cord with me.

In terms of other rooms. We had several of the larger format rooms, and it was disappointing to find not enough blankets and towels, and the fact that the beds have to be made up on arrival. This despite the fact that the rooms were clearly booked for capacity stays.

The blankets are old and worn.

It would be good to see the one framed artistic photo removed from the room and more money spend on new blankets and blinds.

Whilst the view from the room was great, you could not have any natural light in the room without sharing what you were doing with the surrounding office buildings. The blinds are also very old and don't fit the windows.

Despite all of this the location is absolutely awesome for centrality and tram catching and for the price I'd probably do it again. If all you're doing is sleeping in your room than this is a workable place. But I wouldn't share a room with a friend (unless a friend is nimble and one of you is prepared to go the bunkbed option!).

I stopped in room 618 for four nights, in that time the bed sheets were not changed, and the ac, an old box style one was so dirty i took a photo with "please clean me" on the filter in desperation. The air vent was also dirty, i took this photo as well. The foyer had a smell for the three days i stayed. On reporting this to reception there only reply was this is a "budget" hotel. 100$ is not the budget standard i was expecting. Also no luggage storage or Ibis points, quite misleading on the booking process. Basically i would not suggest this hotel. Cold hard metal beds were not a holiday highlight for me!

Room Tip: Not recommended as old dirty and poorly maintained. I suggest you get nicer rooms in a backpackers...

This hotel is about as close as you can get to the main shopping area in Melbourne. Compared to other hotels in central Melbourne, the Budget Ibis represents good value. This doesn’t imply that it is cheap – very few Australian hotels are – but it is probably as economical as possible, given the location. Mid week is cheaper than weekends by as much as twenty percent. Step out of the door of the hotel and there are many eateries within walking distance; some open twenty four hours, so late arrival will not be a problem. There is a small dining room on the first floor where self serve breakfast is available. Rooms are adequate, if small. There is a coin operated laundry on the first floor. I found the lady receptionist to be friendly and helpful.

Room Tip: Turn right outside the hotel and walk toward Flinders Street Station to find a number of cheaper tak...

Stayed there with 3 friends (each one a room). Excellent location, efficient staff. Very helpful as my booking could not be located immidiately. (through Booking.com). Simple rooms 4 beds each, clean. Hotel offers a kitchen for self catering and airport shuttle door to door.
