Description: When we opened the doors to MoVida in Hosier lane, Melbourne in 2003 no one knew what to expect. Here was this little bar on a graffiti covered cobbled lane near the cathedral serving Spanish tapas and shared plates in a down lit room playing funky tunes. It's the kind of place you can come in for a beer and a jamon croquetta at the bar and then move across to a table and share a plate of slow braised lamb, some patatas a lo pobre and down some seriously good Spanish red wine.

“What a way to celebrate”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed May 4, 2015 NEW

We had the most perfect night for our sons 30th birthday- five of us in total. The young ones started with whisky sours and we all enjoyed a magnum of red, Bajondillo. This is the sort of place to share all the dishes. That way you get little tastes of everything. Some of the dishes were very rich and not the sort of dish that just one person could eat alone. We decided to leave the entire menu choice to our waiter who chose beautifully. After tasting the bread, we joked we could just eat the bread and the red wine all night. In itself the bread was a taste sensation. We had 5 entrees and 5 mains between us. The anchovies with tomatoe sorbet, spanish mackeral with pine nut gazpacho, duck liver pate sandwich, croquet with quail egg inside and iberica bellota divine. The shared mains included the spring mussels, uncious rabbit, beef cheek with cauliflower puree, pine mushrooms and pork hock delightful. We then shared the creme caramel and churritos. By allowing the waiter to choose the entire menu and sharing all dishes , which included 1 entree of each type per person- i.e. 5 pieces of each entree as there were 5 of us , took away any angst over what to order and each course just came out one after the other. Service was terrific, ambience fantastic and location ideal- Hosier Lane in the city. We all had such a great time , eating, drinking and laughing together- a special birthday to remember.Tip- book at 2030hrs -the second sitting and you can take your time. We went on a Thursday night. Simply terrific. Trust your waiter.

“Pretty good.....”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 28, 2015 NEW

We had a pretty good meal here, but its not a Wow! The restaurant is very popular and to secure a table you will certainly need to book, though they do 2 sittings (18:30 and 20:30) and keep some seats for walk-ups so you may be lucky if you turn up on the night and are prepared to wait for a while.

The restaurant is buzzy and has a nice ambience. Service is quick, good and friendly. The menu is quite short; we had the ox cheek with cauliflower puree (quite good), the serrano ham (very good), the quail (ok), and the beef tartare (bit small and disappointing).

All in all, pretty good and worth a visit but not fabulous.

“Not as good as expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed April 27, 2015

I visited the first Movida - the one that's always got people waiting outside. The place looked charming and atmoshere was pleasant and unusual. It has the ambience. The food was good, although not spectacular. The disappointing part was the customer service and lack of space. Having to share a table with another couple our dining experience turned from private into very public where you cant help but hear their conversation and they hear yours. The romance was spoilt. The service, although sharp, was aimed at delivering food to us as soon as possible and kicking us out as soon as we finished eating by placing the bill in front of us and asking us to pay and leave. This kind of service and disrespect towards clients is not aaceptable and nothing to be proud of. If this place prides itself in delivering authentic experience, clents should be able to stay and enjoy it for as long as they like.
Finding ways to extend the space, creating separate tables for couples to enjoy a private dining experience and the atmosphere for as long as they like should be on the agenda of the management of this place.
