“One of our favourites but where is the famous Chateaubriand!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 29, 2013

Rarely do I write a review on a hometown restaurant however after our most recent dining experience I feel somewhat obliged to record a disappointment.

As residents of Melbourne CBD for almost 15 years, this iconic Melbourne institution is and has been a long favourite more often for a late brunch, coffee or a drink than an evening meal.

Regrettably our evening meal last Saturday night left us somewhat feeling the establishment was fading.

With an unbeatable location, this restaurant compensates for its sometimes erratic service and well overpriced wine list ( try and find a reasonable bottle under $75) with its signature dish of Chateaubriand for two which was until now outstanding in all respects - value, quality and presentation.

Some fool however has changed the structure , style and content to something far less less than outstanding - whilst traditional dishes at certain restaurant can't be expected to last forever, to serve this dish without any bearnaise sauce or jus seriously undermines a great meal.

A must visit restaurant in Melbourne only when they restore this old favourite !

“Consistently excellent”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed April 25, 2013 via mobile

We made an early dinner booking as we were off to a comedy festival show at the Princess theatre a few doors away. The waiter confirmed this as we were seated and confirmed the start time of our show. Confident and professional service as always, with a lovely classy but understated atmosphere. The crab pasta was exceptional and served promptly. Wine list is extensive with a lovely selection of European wines, however its on the pricey side. Overall this is a fabulous Melbourne restaurant that never fails to deliver.

The European is one of hose places that really does do it's name justice. The fit out, the loyalty and service of the staff and of course the food and wine. Breakfast: brilliant (and open from 7am). Lunch: Brilliant Dinner: Brilliant

“Great service.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 21, 2013

We were luck to get an outside table on a Friday night - as we were walking past. Menu offers a good range of choices. I chose the rabbit and found the serving was smaller than expected. My partner chose coq au vin and really enjoyed it. We had a couple of glasses of imported wines which were very good. There was an extensive wine list.
Overall a lovely venue, good staff and a pleasant experience
