For the price I got the one-bedroom apartment, It was great value. The location wasn't great (10-15 mins from amenities) however for someone intending to take a walking tour, it wasn't too bad at all. Crown Casino is only a 5 min walk, and beautiful Docklands a stroll away. Lygon Street with it's restaraunts a 40 min stroll, or a inexpensive taxi ride (night rate topped $12, as I recall).
Be very prepared for disorganised, passive staff. First night, my partner and I checked in at almost 1am due to my flight being delayed for almost five hours. 24 hour check in is very convenient. However, the hotel claiming to have strict non-smoking and 'no party' policies didn't enforce them too well. My neighbouring apartment was playing music wll over any degree of decency, and the hallway was hazed with cigarette smoke. It took three complaints over two hours for reception to take any sort of action. On top of that, I was awakened at 8am by someone entering (not knocking, entering) the room to check the minibar contents. I found that appauling.
The hotel isn't efficiently serviced. During our four night stay, we ran out of toilet paper and were advised that another roll would incur a charge that was unreasonable. The towels were not changed throughout the duration, the bins were not taken out. "Self contained" to a whole new level. The kitchen was great, though. Neat, tidy, cosy.
Apartment itself was a pleasure - modern styling, air-conditioning (came in handy with the hot weather), small balcony to accomodate my smoking partner. Has dishwasher and provides one complimentary tablet. Washing machine and dryer provided however powder is at an unreasonable price (4.50 per one use packet), so stock up on your own.
The biggest problem I encountered had to be the reception staff. I payed a deposit that I wasn't advised of on top of the cost of stay up front, which was frozen on my account until the end of my stay. On checkout, the staff neglected to unfreeze the hold before charging me the cost of stay minus deposit. I was notified when I rang Reception from Sydney after seeing my account doubly overdrawn, that when the hold was released by Medina on the day after, that it would take up to 72 hours for the money to be returned into my account. Meanwhile, I'm paying excessive interest on the overdrawn amount, as well as the overdrawn fee.
Be aware to have plenty of funds when entering into any transaction with Medina. I found the staff patronising when they were addressing my problem, advising me that the bank was aware of the circumstances. My bank (ComBank) was certainly not.
