“Good Location, Great Value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed April 12, 2011

We have just returned from a stay at the Oaks on Market and were very impressed. Although we had the base Studio Room, it was extremely spacious with a large bathroom and mini-kitchen, clean and tidy with comfortable bed and furniture.
The location is quite central with both the free tourist bus and tram stops nearby, and is also walking distance to most of the things that the city has to offer.
With the exception of one staff member, I was extremely impressed with the service provided. The only negative I would have is that there is no free wi-fi internet.
I would most definately recommend this hotel to our friends and family.

I stayed in Oaks on Market Hotel in Melbourne for a 2 nights for Conference in March 2011. . On checking in the receiption staff were good & rooms were clean & well maintained. On checking out , the lady at the reception was not keen to help & rude. I asked for a receipt for the stay so that I could reimburse the accomodation fee from my work place. The lady refused me a receipt saying that since I booked the room through Expedia an itenary from them is fine as proof of stay.
Now the hospital has refused me the reimbursement on stay & demand original receipt of stay. This has put me in a very difficult position as I have to chase up the receipt & this will delay the payment.
This is absolutely shocking service for a 4 star hotel not to provide a receipt for stay inspite of asking for it . I gather even the grocery stores gives proof of purchase & you don't have to keep nagging them for that.

A disappointed customer.

I stayed here for three nights for a conference and found the central location excellent - close to everything for business and pleasure. I was given a much appreciated early check-in and had a room on a high floor also as per request, with a beautiful view. The room was large with a well-equipped mini-kitchen. The bathroom was also large and spotlessly clean. The bed was comfortable and the pillows were soft although rather high. Unfortunately there was no other choice of pillow (although they tried, not even a child pillow).

The service at the front desk was great and the staff very helpful. The room service/housekeeping was not quite so efficient. On the first morning they forgot to service my room altogether. When i returned in the evening I rang Reception and they apologised and offered clean towels. The next day the room was serviced, however my room service meal tray from the previous night was still in the passageway 2 mornings later!

The room service was prompt and generally tasty with the exception of the mashed potato which was not fresh but the reconstituted dehydrated type. I am very aware of this type of potato as I am allergic to the preservatives found in it. Not really up to the standard of the rest of the hotel.

The breakfast was included in my room package and it was a pretty standard buffet offered by these types of properties with a reasonable choice of hot and cold food. The coffee was pretty ordinary but you could pay extra for a 'real' coffee if you wanted.

Room Tip: ask for a high floor with a Yarra view.

We have just stayed for 4 nights. Room was excellent - quiet aside from some air cond fans at night. NO NOISE from neighbours (rooms occupied) or from hallway or from fridge or from trams or from trains ... . Can't get much more central than this location.
Reception staff very helpful and available and friendly. Cleaning staff exceptionally unobtrusive.
Excellent lap pool and gym downstairs. Pool room a little dark as enclosed, but warm and well maintained. About 18m long, room for 3 or 4 lap swimmers, never busy, spa and sauna excellent and almost unused. Gym looks over pool.
Restaurant/bar downstairs looked good, reasonable, some good specials, and quite popular with locals as well as residents. Melbourne has so much choice of good food and cafes that a shame to dine in unless weather inclement.
our favourite eating locations - Hardware Lane (restaurants one end, cafes the other, be ready to queue at lunch-time for takeaway sushi), St Kilda (try the healthy burger place on main street), Southbank, and Lygon St. David Jones has a good cafe in food-hall well worth a visit.

I have a studio room just beside the elevator and with no view, which was not an issue as I wasn't in the room much and am not a light sleeper. The room was clean, which was a pleasant surprise. The guest services were very helpful and they had allowed me to check-in early.
However, I have to say the in-room amenities was really lacking. For the price, I would expect at least a shower gel, rather than the pathetic bars of soap. Also, they did not provide bedroom slippers and the floor was cold.

Oaks on Market lived up to its very good review in recent times during our stay over the Grand Prix weekend. We stayed in a one bedroom apartment which we had set up with a sofa bed in the living room. Apartment was well equiped, clean and with everything working. The only issue we encountered during our stay was that the extra blankets and pillows were used to set up the sofa bed rather than have extras brought into the room - this was quickly rectified on request.

We requested a high floor with the Yarra River views with this request being acknowledged.

Car parking is available at a commercial 24 hour car-park across the road for a discounted daily rate of $20.

Buffet breakfast was excellent in quality and range but like other reviewers we suggest pre-purchasing.

The pool and spa was very good but like other reviewers found that walking down a set of stairs was a bit annoying as the service lift that doubled as the lift to the basement (pool level) was not able to be used.

Highly recommend Oaks on Market.

The staff were quite friendly, especially 'Blake' on Reception.
We had a studio room and were very impressed withe size and the wonderful view over the Yarra and towards Port Phillip Bay, we were on the top floor.
Everything you need to be self sufficient and very clean indeed. The bed was oh so comfortable.
The restaurant and bar were very good, breakfast is cheaper if pre-paid the day before.
Just a few problems which were soon rectified. On arrival we put the TV on...picture but no sound. On ringing reception we were told to turn the TV off at the mains, wait for 60 seconds and turn it back on, choose a different station and then the one we wanted and got sound. Problem was we had to do it for the four nights we were there.
Bathroom is very large, shower over the bath. No soap holder in the shower/bath but maintenance soon put that right. No toilet roll holder, although you could see where it had been, maintenance rectified that.
The main light in the bathroom didn't work, soon rectified.
We would definitely stay here again, great location...but beware, although there are taxis outside, they will not take you on what they refer to as 'short trips'. We needed to get from the hotel to Swanston St to pick up our hire care on the last day, too far for someone who is disabled to walk. Thank you Oaks on Market for coming to our rescue :-)
