“Reasonable Budget Accommodation”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed March 11, 2014

This is my second time staying at the Hotel Sophia. The hotel is within easy walking distance to the Melbourne CBD and very close to the King Street stop for the free circle-line tram. The standard room is of average size, the bed comfortable and the provision of a mini-fridge and kettle is great. The hotel is reasonably priced. The inclusion of breakfast is a bonus, with options including 4 cereals, numerous types of bread for toasting, eggs and bacon, and fruit/yoghurt if you get up early enough. Whilst the walls are thin and most rooms get street noise, for the price you really can't go wrong.

Room was clean and tidy that is the best it gets, all down hill from here.Bed or should i say beds squashed together were like sleeping on concrete as for the pillows they matched the bed so much so on the last night of a three day nightmare we rolled up the dressing gowns to use as pillows. Now on to the breakfast except for green tea and coffee we had to get our supply of English tea off of the house keeping trolley to take with us each morning . empty serving trays and or cold food greeted us each morning very unappetizing no staff except for a (very rude and unapproachable)kitchen hand to be seen anywhere cleaning used tables or checking dining room food supplies.we certainly got what we paid for $99.00 per night special. As for their 4 star rating somebody must of been paid off to get it i would say 3 star would be an over-rating in my book has to be the worst place we have stayed ever.

Room Tip: do not stay in room 208 no view except industrial outlook, window is locked shut and guest laundry i...

Wasn't sure what to expect, had the room with shared bathroom and breakfast included. Pleasantly surprised, room was reasonably big and clean, the little extras like coffee bags instead of instant and decent toiletries were great. The shared bathroom was clean and was less inconvenient than expected. Breakfast was pretty good considering we only paid $99 for room.
Down side was that our room was one level up from the road and being an old or heritage building the big glass windows weren't double glazed ( I'm assuming ) because you could hear a lot street noise. And each time we had to wait for someone to come to front desk for quite a while when checking in and out which seemed like they were under staffed. But that was pretty much it. Good for one or two nights if your going to be out and about for the day.

Stayed at Sophia in February 2014.
I had previously read some of the mixed reviews and was unsure whether booking this place was a good idea.
I was, however, pleasantly surprised by standard and value.
This is an inner city hotel at country rates.
The staff were friendly and attentive.
The included breakfast was good, and the attached bar served good cheap meals.
I would definitely stay here again.

By reading the reviews you could be forgiven for thinking you are going to stay in hell, but it is not that at all.

Yes - service is thin on the ground. But if you expect it and show some patience, it's fine. Not having a hotel full of staff means the costs are lower. They were always friendly and professional.

Don't be fooled by exterior of hotel. I was worried but thankfully the saying don't judge a book by its cover is true!

The room was fine. It could do with a coat of paint, but bed was comfy, decent size, robes, coffee pod machine, plenty of towels, desk, tv with Foxtel. It had all the inclusions and more than you get at other hotels (I'm looking at you Tune!).

It was a decent size and bathroom was good. It was clean, well presented and had chocolates on the pillow. Breakfast was included each morning which is a bonus. You won't be astounded by the choices of breakfast but hey, look at the price you are paying!! I never had any issue with the hot food running out as others had and I was there for three days.

I had low expectations going in, and left happy. It was an amazing price and it over delivered. Thank you Hotel Sophia!

We stayed at Hotel Sophia on the night of January 8th, 2014. Arrived near midnight because we went to Phillips Island for the Penguin Parade. We called the hotel in advance to ask where we could park to check in and they said to park in front of the hotel. Because it was late and we were leaving early next morning, we asked the receptionist whether it was ok for us to park our car in the meter spot in front of the hotel overnight. The receptionist told us that we would have to put money into the meter or move the car by 7.30AM otherwise we would receive a ticket. He repeated that information several time, reminding us to put money in the parking meter by 7.30AM. The next morning (of the day of our international flight back home) we went down to put money into the meter at 7.20AM and realized that our car has been towed. Turns out, during the week, the meter spots in front of the hotel are in towing zone between 7AM and 7.30AM. We had to take a taxi to the impound location, pay to get our car and pay for the parking violation ticket.
The misinformation we have received from your staff had cost us nearly $500. In addition, we nearly missed our flight.
By the time we left, the manager was no where to be found. Upon coming home, we wrote a long email to the hotel only to receive a message saying they looked into the issue and found that their staff has done nothing wrong. We should have parked in the hotel parking which was a few blocks away.
As travellers we rely on our hotel for information. In this case Hotel Sophia failed in every way to provide their customers with the necessary assistance and we are extremely dissatisfied with the way they handle customer satisfaction.
Add to that the tiny room, the hair found in the bathroom and poor breakfast. We will not come back.

I have stayed at Hotel Sophia quite a few times now, basically because of the convenient location and the breakfasts. Price is also usually very competitive. Easily the worst thing about the hotel has been the service, specifically at reception. It is nearly always understaffed - once when I was checking in (not on my last visit) had to wait 5-6 minutes for someone to appear. If you can overlook that very significant deficiency, the Hotel Sophia does tick a few other boxes.
Location is very good: close to Southern Cross station in but still in a quiet part of King St. I have not had a problem with extraneous noise. The rooms are always clean and usually spacious for a budget hotel (they seem to vary in size a bit). Firm queen-size bed and a couple of comfy hairs. The odd thing out during most recent stay was the tiny and almost unusable desk/table. There are other nice touches you don't expect and rarely get: a teapot, espresso coffee machine (capsules), even chocolate mints on the pillow. They appear to be making an effort.
Breakfast is included in the tariff and is good. Hot buffet plus healthy cereal options like muesli, Weet-Bix, yoghurt and fruit.
