“Feel let down - not the splurge we'd expected”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed June 23, 2010

We chose to stay at the Alto as a treat to ourselves after two weeks on the road staying in 'family affordable' accommodation options. I was very impressed by the Alto's committment to environment sustainability and it was a deciding factor in securing my business. The final deciding factor was that cooked breakfast was included in the price.
The staff right through our stay were fantastic and very helpful. It was great to finally have someone lug my bag into the room and then back into the car the next morning. The rooms were only just big enough, however the bathroom was huge with a great shower head. I know this sounds crazy, but the toilet seat was tiny! Very uncomfortable and freezing cold!!
What made me disgruntled over our stay was that the parking was offsite and was in a very scary feeling location. I had to park my car at 10:30 at night, on my own. So driving down behind closed gates, adjacent to a vacant and rundown building covered in graffiti and rubbish was not my idea of safety. Plus, once in this very frightening compound, there were no directions on how on earth to get out. I would have been happy to pay for valet parking on that one! Also, I asked twice prior to our arrival about parking to ensure we could reserve a space and it was not once mentioned that it was 1. offsite or 2. at additional cost.
Another reason I don't rate this hotel is that it advertises the touchy feely nice reading room, massage chairs and complimentary espresso coffee and hot chocolate etc. But again, no mention that the hours are limited. So when I safely made it back to the hotel after parking the car, I was really disappointed that I missed out on a massage and coffee before heading off to bed.
On the upside, we'd really suffered through our trip with shocking mattresses and pillows, however, at the Alto, we had the most comfortable night's sleep of our entire trip.
The mattress, pillows and great staff were the saving factor in our stay, however, I won't choose to stay here again if I have my own car. Great if you're using public transport, very central and on the doorstep of trains and trams.

Our showers are often mentioned for satisfation and they are also water saving using a maximum of 8 litres per minute.

Beds are also often praised and sometimes followed up with questions on model and where they can be bought.

Parking - We have missed being informative as per our website and as we should advise all car parking bookings / enquiries - "Car parking offsite, plus limited parking onsite. Fee applies unless a hybrid or electric vehicle then free of charge plus free recharge with 100% green energy" . We are currently negotiating to purchase parking spaces in a nearby multi story facility.

We loved everything about this hotel and on coming back to Melbourne will definitely stay there again. We stayed in a studio apartment - some of the reviews have stated that these rooms are small but we found them quite comfortable and of the same size as many other studio’s that we have stayed in. The most noticeable thing when entering the apartment was how clean it was, it really was spotless. We had breakfast included so we ate at the A-Lounge during our stay, even if you don’t have this included I would recommend you do as the food was incredible and the overall atmosphere of the hotel was really relaxed and lovely. The staff are very friendly and genuine. The hotel is a bit further away from the CBD than some of the others, but we enjoyed this as it was very quiet and it is only a short walk into the CBD or if you are tired of walking there is a tram directly out the front.

This hotel has to be the best I have stayed in. The staff are friendly, the hotel is clean, quiet and comfortable. The restaurant staff were very friendly, and the food was excellent. If I have to come to Melbourne again, I will look no further than the Alto. Value for money ... excellent. Well done guys. Keep it up.

We stayed for 3 nights in a studio and loved it. The room was spotless, modern in decor with a lovely bathroom. Excellent internet, good breakfast, and a very handy, efficient laundry rounded out the amenities. The location was great, as noted by others you have only a few minutes walk after you arrive on the airport Skybus. We walked everywhere, eating most nights at the restaurants along the Yarra River. Would highly recommend.

All you want in a hotel really - close to the station, efficient reception, clean quiet rooms, free internet, pleasant staff, very good breakfast - and a free book exchange. Would definitely book again and would recommend to others.

The Alto Hotel is an excellent choice for anyone wanting to stay in Melbourne's CBD. The room was great, but above all the service was a class above! Nothing was a problem and even after we checked out we were given assistance, first class.

The location is wonderful, only a short walk to Southern Cross Station or there are trams right out the front.
